Help with hand calluses

Hi, my husband gets calluses all over his hands. And then when he works the tear open and become very sore. He always wears gloves to try and protect his skin and keeps his hands lotioned regularily. But the calluses rip off and then the skin cracks and makes a sore. Is there a certain condition associated with this kind of thing? Does anyone know ways to help with calluses on hands? He can't stop working or rest his hands, and wearing the proper gloves doesn't seem to be working.

Does he ever soak his hands and exfoliate with anything like a scrub or pumice stone?  I'd recommend trying to soak the hands in Epsom salts and scrubbing the callouses with a clean pumice stone- this should help to remove them so he doesn't tear them off while working- which sounds very painful.  Moisturize after exfoliating as well.
