Itchy "Random" Rashes After Valtrex

Hello, I recently had a Cold Sore  (1st one ever) and went to a dermatologist. She prescribed 1GM twice a day for one day. Afterwards, take same dosage at first sign of symptoms.

I took the pills and about 1/2 day after first dosage, I began to feel itchy and small rashes began to appear and disappear throughout my body. They appeared on my hands, wrist, above the knee, neck, around my rib area, and waist.

It's been over 36 hours since I've taken the last dosage and these skin irritations persist. I attached a picture I took of the last occurrence. Any suggestions as to what this may be is greatly appreciated. I would like to know if this is Shingles beginning to set in, a heat rash, or something else.

Thanks!

I am suffering the same exact symptoms and it has been 2 weeks since I stopped taking Valtrex and have been on prednisone and atarax for the itchy rash that is so random and comes and goes. It is driving me insane.
Will it ever go away?!?!? what happened to yours?
t is almost like I never took anything for it. The itch is unbearable.

Thank you for the reply!

I called the dermatologist that prescribed the Valtrex and explained to her what was going on. She suggested I take Benedryl but I opted for Allegra since it seemed more potent. I purchased the 12 hour brand and it stops the rash for about 16 hours. I hope that's a sign that this is not viral. As soon as Alegra wears off, the rash kicks back in.

It's been two days on Alegra (1 pill/day). I'm hoping this is only for another few days tops. It's been 8 days today since the rash started.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Since the rash appeared after taking the medicine, it can be due to hives skin which has appeared in response to allergic reaction to the medicine .However possibility of a viral rash is always there. Avoid using any lotions and creams for the meantime and inform your doctor regarding the itchy hives as the medication may need to be changed. Use a mild cleanser with moisturizing properties like Cetaphil. Also use cotton clothes and change the clothes twice if there is any increased sweating. Try keeping the skin free of sweat as far as possible. If the symptoms still persist then you can apply mild steroid like dermacort. For the itching antihistaminics like Benadryl or Claritin can be taken.
If the symptoms persist then get it evaluated from a dermatologist.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
