Red bumps on hands

For the past 6+ months I have been getting bumps on my fingers that come and go.  They last for a few weeks and then resolve only to pop up somewhere else.  They are mostly on the finger joints but sometimes elsewhere on the fingers and today I even have one on the palm of my hand.  They are about the size of a pencil eraser, are raised and red. They do not itch but hurt to touch. What are they?
I have pictures but cant figure out how to post them.
