Travel to dessert

I live in the sunless Midwest (at least during the winter) and am planning a trip to the dessert area near Palm Springs, California. I was wondering if it would be more helpful or harmful to schedule a few tanning bed sessions before I leave to "prep" my skin for the dramatic change. I will be spending most of my time outdoors while there. I know tanning beds are considered harmful over the long term so I'd appreciate some professional input. I will be packing plenty of sunscreen of  course.
