My boyfriend is 40, we dated 21 years ago and he had same problem then.  He will take a shower and then towel dry.  He smells great.  The towel smells like ammonia, then after it drys it is just horrible bo.  He gets mad because I wash his towel after one use but it stinks up whole bathroom.  He does not smell it.  What could this be?  Please help this is something I can not take.

My bf has same problem.  I have to wash towels daily.  He eats a lot of meat.

Do you think the meat is why?  How long has it been like this?  Thanks for commenting and sharing- it helps others to know they are not alone!
I don’t know for sure. We talked about it last night. He’s going to try eating a more plant based diet but still eating meat which is fine. I think he really needs meat/protein. He’s also going to try having a tbsp or two of apple cider vinegar per day. 1 tbsp at a time tho.
How are things going with the diet changes?  You are right, he does need protein for sure!
Actually things are getting much better with all that.

Hello,
Ammoniacal smell that your boyfriend is having can be due to sweating. Although perspiration is basically odorless, it can take on an unpleasant smell when it comes into contact with bacteria on the skin. Most often, it's the bacterial breakdown of apocrine sweat that causes a strong odor.

Ammonia smell of the sweat could indicate liver or kidney disease.

Take regular baths and wear loose cotton clothes. Please avoid taking heavy fatty meal and eat nutritious, healthy food. If the ammonical smell still persists then he should evaluated for liver or kidney disorders.

I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep us posted on how you are doing.

Any wet towel will smell bad if you leave it out for a long time. Maybe he has really greasy skin. It's great that you posted here, but I would also go with your boyfriend to see a dermatologist.
