I've never used Novolog, but had used Humalog for quite awhile until about 6 months ago. The Humalog worked pretty well for me,but when i switched to a pump, my doctor had me try Apidra and it's really worked great. My blood sugar comes down a lot faster with the Apidra and it keeps my post meal readings pretty good too....
I have read other articles that discuss more allergy issues with Humalog than with Novolog. But as LRS has written, each person is different, and there really IS no set standard that is perfect for each person. With this disease, some trial and error is absolutely necessary in order to discover what works best for the individual. Furthermore,I want to point out that while Forum-vol-cmb finds that one unit of insulin per 12 grams of carbohydrate is perfect, this ratio is certainly individual, and every person has his or her own proper insulin-to-carb ration. Even as an identical twin, my ratio is different from my twin's. So don't take those numbers as some sort of standard dose for a "normal" diabetic person.
I have also noticed better control with Novolog, which I use in my pump. I had okay control with Humalog, altho' my ups & downs were troublesome. I seem to have tighter ranges with Novolog.
I suppose the key is that we work with our docs to find something that works well for us. I'm glad there are several choices for insulin, so that more folks can be successful with their routines.
No I have not had that experience with Humalog-in fact it works very well for me. I use a sliding scale of Humalog at mealtimes and I use 14 units of Lantis each evening. Lantis is a 24 cylce insulin or a long acting insulin where Humalog is short term or short acting insulin. But this just shows you that different people have different needs. Before I used Lantis I used to use NPH-which is a shorter long acting inuslin-more like 8 hours. Have you tried giving your Novolin before you eat? I figure out how many carbohydrates I will eat and then give my dose accordingly-before I eat my meal. For every 12 grams of carbohydrates I take one unit of Humalog. I then do not go from high to low and do not have to play a game of catch up.
