Question about sugar in an IV

Hello. I have read that some IV's (like they hook you up to for a surgery) have sugar or salt in them. Is there any way to request a specific IV during a surgery that does not contain sugar?

Certainly you should request that you not be given any IV fluids with sugar in them.  The IV with sugar in them typically say "Dextrose" on the lable.

The IV without sugar are typically lactated ringers, saline based solutions.  Please also double check what they actually give you.  I have had to tell nurses "no, this is not correct", and request them the ones without sugar.

Oh yes, I'm sure you can talk to your doctor about this and your request would be noted before surgery.  good luck
