Has anyone had a DCK with type 1 diabetes?

My 2.5 yo DCB was just diagnosed last week. Understandably, DCM's head is all over the place. At first, she was going to come here during the day every time he needed to be tested. She works 30 minutes away, so that is not ideal. Then she was going to switch him to half days and have gma watch him every morning, testing just before he got here. Then she was going to get a nurse come in. Now she's asking if I would be willing/comfortable testing him and giving him insulin as needed if she provided training from a nurse.

Before I answer her, I was hoping to get a better idea of what is involved from a childcare prospective before I respond.

Hi,  trying to figure out some of your abbreviations.  DCK.  Is that daycare kid?  day care boy, day care mom?  Just want to make sure I understand.  One thing that is so very helpful for newly diagnosed kids with diabetes are diabetic educators.  That is a specialty trained to train families on what to expect.  The children's hospital in your area certainly has one if not the endocrinologist that diagnosed the boy.  I think in terms of staff providing testing and shots, that's something I'd check out first with regards to your liability insurance.  That aspect, unfortunately, does come into play.  In the public school setting, they often have to provide trained aids with certification for such things.  So, this may not be something liability wise that would make sense for you.  Very tough on the family but it does change the dynamics of his care.  Let me know how this turns out!
