Hypoglycemia

Hi everybody! In the past 3 months, I wake up in the morning and my feet are numb. After I get up and walk around the numbness goes away within about 5-10 minutes. I also urinate often and get fatigues (which may be normal, plus I drink a lot of water). I seem to keep my weight down too easily these days, I eat a lot, and I only mildly exercise (walking, hiking and pilates). Anyway, I told my doctor at Kaiser and she ran a random blood glucose test (non-fasting). My blood sugar was 68 ml/dl, the standard range is 70-140 ml/dl. She says to just eat less carbs and do more cardio exercise, and that this could be pre-diabetes. The part that concerns me is the numb feet. I have cut down carbs in the past 2 weks and continued to exercise more, but still my feet are numb, and hurt sometimes. Any advice?

Note: I also finished treatment for Hep C 6 months ago and cleared the virus! I'm not sure if these symptoms could be side effects from the medications I was taking for hep C (Interfuron, ribivirnin and victrelis).

First, congrats on obtaining SVR!

Random Glucose Testing
I'm with Kaiser Nor Cal. Random glucose [fasting] range is 60-159 mg/dl. Random non-fasting really doesn't provide a clear picture. A low of 68 mg/dl is worth follow up testing; Fasting, an OGTT [Oral Glucose Tolerance Test] and/or an A1c. if the OGTT points to diabetes and A1c usually is ordered. The OGTT sees how well your body shed excess glucose. The A1c looks at your glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. Kaiser doc should have ordered these tests - email her and request labs.

Numb Feet and Diabetes
This could be associated with diabetic neuropathy which is damage to the nerves. When a nerve is pinched, per se, for a period of time and then is released it will "Wake up" and cause that shooting, tingling, cramping, numbness feeling. Poor circulation is another cause. Unsure if Kaiser has an Vascular Surgeon on staff to run tests for poor circulation.

Fatigue & Numb Feet
Hypoglycemia can cause fatigue [see above on testing]. Also, a common side effect of Int/Riba is fatigue AND numb feet. Post on the HCV Forum to see if others encountered awakening foot numbness.

Thanks! Yeah, I've emailed my doctor 3 times asking her to do a fasting blood glucose test, but she keeps saying the non fasting a accurate enough. If it was low, I want to have further tests done. I think I am going to get a new doctor. I love the this forum and the Hep C forum. Thank you for your input.
