if you need to take units of novalog but doctor want you to take lantus too is that ok to take both at same time

Agree, it's OK to take both. However, don't mix the two together and inject each at different sites. Mixing can ruin the effectiveness.

Yes taking both insulins is very common and needed.
Lantus is a Basal insulin (long lasting insulin), Novalog is a Bolis insulin (short term).  use the novalog to counter high BG and eating carbs.
