light activity - jump in blood sugar

I am 63 years, diagnosed with Type II about one year ago.   I do not take insulin, but take medicines.  My blood sugar is usually around 100, today I was outside in the shade doing a little yard work for 30-40 minutes.  About one hour before going out, my count was 89, I started feeling strange, came in and check and it was 179.  The work was not streneous.  Why would it go up so high so quickly?  Any advice on eating before or after of any will be welcomed.

Exercise can have various effects on blood sugar, both raising it and lowering it. It's important to check more frequently when you exercise and get some idea how particular tasks usually affect your blood sugar. Also to think about what you might have eaten before the exercise that might have had a slow rise in blood sugar to that level.
