Can anyone help me with this diet ?

Hi everyone. I'm coming here because my boyfriend is on this very special diet that we found on Quora. He's has a BMI of 31.5 and is really concerned about losing weight. Problem is, I am uncertain whether or not this diet is good for his body. Here is a summary of the diet
1: Drink one liter of water right when you wake up.
2: Take omega 3’s like fish oil caps or chia seed (no more than 40 calories).
3: One hour after waking, drink 1 more liter of water.
4: One hour after waking, drink 1 cup of coffee or tea (no sugar, very light cream/butter if you want).
5: 6–7 hours after waking drink 25g protein shake (low carb) and one liter of water.
6: Two hours after first shake drink another 25g protein shake (low carb).
7: 30 minutes to one hour after my second shake, I workout and drink one liter of water during workout.
8: Right after my workout I drink a 50g protein shake and 15 minutes after that I have 100–150g of carbs via dextrose powder (I eat Twinkies, cookies, donuts,...)
9: One hour after my workout I will have my big solid meal, (whatever I want as long as it has a good amount of protein).
10: By this time I have consumed 100g of protein via shake and 40–60ish grams of protein via solid meal (depending on meal). I make up the other 70 grams via shake, chicken breast, tuna, low calorie protein sources because I am never really hungry at this time because I am so full still from the big solid meal. The point is, no need to eat unnecessary calories for food we are not really going to enjoy, so I prefer shakes with a chicken breast before bed. Make sure to consume at least .5–1g of protein per body pound.

I am quite concerned about my boyfriend's health, as this diet seems very brutal. It skips breakfast and lunch, requires to drink a unsettling amount of water and to work out on an empty stomach. Could anyone give me a professional opinion about it? Thank you very much

Hi carolinc... No, I don't think this diet does sound healthy.  It only centers on protein and I'm afraid it might be very lacking in nutrients.  The body needs a wide variety of nutrients, other than protein.

I see nothing that indicates your husband would be eating vegetables, fruits, meats or anything that would be providing the calcium, vitamins and other minerals his body needs.  Yes, I know, many protein shakes have added vitamins and minerals, but they often don't contain everything we need to stay healthy...

It's also not something that can be maintained over the long term, so once the weight is lost, then what?  If one does not develop healthy eating habits, chances of regaining lost weight, often, plus some, are very great and can result in yo-yo dieting... Please note the title of the article "What is the fastest way to lose fat - don't care if it's ethical"...or safe to diet like that...

Try to convince your husband to implement a diet that consists of lean protein in the form of meats, eggs and legumes, along with a wide variety of colorful veggies and fruits, healthful fats, etc in the amounts he needs for his own body, based on his current age, weight and height, with reasonable exercise.  By doing this, he can make lifestyle changes and come up with a plan that he can stick with in order to stay healthy for life, not just a quick fix.

Please post back and let us know how we can further help you.
