9 yr old daughter overweight

My daughter has always struggled with a heavy type body from the start.  She has been to endocrine and dietician specialists.  She is eating the appropriate foods and amounts...  She is not a couch potato either.  Why is it so hard for her to maintain a normal body?  They say it's just the way her body is....She is 9 and weighs 110 lbs.....I don't know what else to do to help her....

How tall is your daughter?  Since you are concerned, I'm assuming that she might be rather "pudgy"?

I agree that you should let her be a kid; I don't agree that she has enough time to worry about her weight; if there is a valid issue now, it needs to be dealt with before she becomes an adult, when it will be much harder to control. A rule of thumb is - a heavy child will become a heavy adult (not always, though, as you will see later in my post). But make sure she's too heavy before you get overly concerned.

I agree that her doctor would be able to tell you what she should weigh; however you need to take all factors into consideration - what/how much she eats, what type/how much exercise she gets, whether or not she has medical issues that affect her metabolism (thyroid, insulin resistance, adrenals etc).

If all of the medical issues have been ruled out, you might want to relax a bit and wait until she's a few years older.  My grand daughter was very heavy as a young child; however, as she got older and taller, she really began to slim down.  She's now 15 and her weight is in line with her height.

Maybe your daughter just needs to eat more veggies and lean protein and less fruit or fats. You might try implementing the food diary here on Med Help to keep track of what she is eating/drinking; that will help you see at a glance if she needs to increase one type of food or decrease another.

Best of luck to you and your daughter.

Hi Jeanne,
What does her Dr. Say? Both of my kids weigh more than me. My son just turned 11 on October 4 and weighs 135 -138 flucuating....he is 5'4 though, my daughter is 13 and weighs 143 and is 5'7, so if your daughter is taller then her weight is probably ok. Her Ped. Dr, should be able to let you know. I always say to both my kids, do not look at the number that the scale says, is she healthy? Is she active? Both my kids are very active in sports, by far NOT couch potatoes either. But, we are all made up differently. As i have gotten older, I am 34 since I turned 30, my weight always seem to bounce around from 127 -135 and i am 5'4. Just like my son's friends some are like Sticks sooo thin but eat and eat and eat. Everyone is made up differently. What does her DR. say her normal body weight is. Face it, so many of us are NOT happy with the weight we are, but like I said everyone's body is different. She is so young for you to be sooo concerned as long as her height is in proportion to her weight then stop worrying so much. My dad's side of the family, all the boys went through a chuncky stage is what I called it, around 10 -13 then UP the height went and all the weight lost. I can remember being 10 years old and weighing around 100 pounds, no biggie unless she is super SHORT. Like I said her regular DR. should be easing your mind a bit. Look her height and weight up online see if it is normal. Kids today seem to grow in height and mature a lot sooner than when I was growing up too. Good Luck and try to stop worrying so much. Let her be a kid, let her enjoy her childhood. She will have enough time to worry about weight when she gets older when it really is difficult to maintain.
