Thank you all for your quick responses. I talked to my Oncologist today when I saw him and he doesn't want me to go on a diet right now. I am having a problem with the Thalidomide that I am taking as it is making me dizzy, upsets my stomach and nauseous and I think he is concerned about me going on a diet because of the side effects. He really didn't go into it but that is what I think.
I agree that you need to talk with your doctor. If you do decide to do Atkins ensure you follow it properly. My husband and I did it and liked the initial induction phase so stayed on that with the restrictive carbs. Unfortunately we both ended up with gout.
I agree with the above. Talk to your doctor about whether you should try Atkins or not. I was on Atkins for approximately 5 months (something happened and I completely stopped eating, but it isn't related to the diet). The results were fantastic. By the end of the second week I (a carb lover) didn't want to eat carbs although I was still eating fruits and veggies. I lost weight and I felt good. Atkins does have "extreme" restrictions, especially during the Induction phase, when you are allowed to eat only 20 g of carbs, no more. Then it allows you to gradually incorporate carbs to your meals. One of the results of the Atkins diet is Ketosis. That's when you know you're doing things right.
BUT..............I consulted with my doc, so you should do the same, and always remember that when you're on a diet, it is always wise to take nutritional supplements.
Keep us posted, and good luck :)
Welcome.
It's best not go on any diet that restricts any food groups. Discuss with your doctor any diet that you are thinking of trying as you need to make sure that all of your nutritional requirements are met.
Good luck and hope to see you around.
With multiple myeloma as a diagnosis, so much depends on the method of treatment and truly believe your doctor should be consulted and approve the method of weight loss you select.
At present, may I suggest you consider the nutritional recommendations from the National Institutes of Health http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002449.htm#Recommendations OR from the American Cancer Society http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MED/content/MED_2_1X_American_Cancer_Society_guidelines_on_diet_and_cancer_prevention.asp
Very best wishes .. and welcome to the community!!!
