Sunday Weigh-In August 25, 2019

Good morning... how are we this morning?  There's not much excitement here.  It looks like we have a couple of storms headed our way, but the first one is only bringing rain, from the looks of it - like we haven't had enough rain this summer... Being one who needs the sunshine, we've had way too much rain/clouds this summer, even while the heat has been oppressive.  Anyway, we'll be into September soon and hopefully, we'll get a break in the heat, at least, even if our major storm season isn't over yet and they're saying, now, that we're going to get more storms than originally predicted.  If that's true it will mean they're going to be coming fast and furious as we haven't really had any "storms" in the form of tropical storms or hurricanes; it's all just been in the form of rain showers moving through.

Anyway, other than the weather, there's not much new here... I mentioned last week that I'd been diagnosed with H Pylori again and had another visit at my doctor's office for a referral to the gastroenterologist.  I did get the referral and although I didn't hear anything back for a couple of days, once I did, it didn't take long to get the ball rolling.  Once they reviewed my record, the determination was to go ahead and schedule an endoscopy right away and it just so happened they'd had a cancellation on Tuesday, the 27th.

My pcp's office had also ordered an abdominal ultrasound, which I had done on Monday and got the results on Wed.  The ultrasound was inconclusive as to what the new bulge in my tummy is, so my pcp has ordered a follow up CT, which was recommended  on the ultrasound report.  I was going to do that tomorrow, but it will require drinking the barium contrast material, which could mess things up for the endoscopy on Tues, so I've scheduled the CT for Wed Morning instead...

I'm still taking antibiotics for the H Pylori - will take the last dose this morning - but judging from ongoing symptoms, I'm pretty sure the treatment has been unsuccessful.  My abdomen is bloated and swollen and I'm still pretty much living on yogurt, oatmeal and watermelon as those are the things that don't cause my acid reflux to be  so horrible.  I can only eat very small amounts each time I eat, but then I'm hungry in a short time. We did go to the funeral of a former co-worker on Friday, after which there was a pot luck barbeque and I ate some regular food, though  only a bite or two of several different items.  I definitely paid for that as even the double dose of acid reducer that I'm taking with the antibiotics couldn't control my acid reflux that night.

As you might imagine, I'm not feeling real sporty.  Today is our 52nd wedding anniversary, but we aren't going to do much of anything.  We did go out for a nice lunch yesterday, so that's sufficient.

I seem to be gaining weight even though I'm eating less.  I guess that could be due to the fact that I'm not getting an adequate amount of exercise in spite of the fact that I'm eating less or it could have something to do with whatever is going on with my digestive system.  Personally, I'm inclined to think it might be thyroid related, since my doctor refuses to acknowledge that could be a problem, there's little I can do about that part of it, right now.

Whatever the cause, I'm up by 2.1 pounds from last week, so I guess I'll need to try to get out and walk a bit more because I can't really cut back anymore on the amount I'm eating since only a few bites has me full now.  It's only a couple more days until my endoscopy then the CT scan so hopefully, by the end of the week, I'll know what's going on and there will soon be a plan to get it fixed.

So - that's me... how are you doing?  I hope you've been able to meet/exceed any goals you set for yourself and that your week went the way you wanted it to.

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week~~

Wow, Barb, what a handful of medical woes. I sure hope they straighten it all out soon, it must be so frustrating! It seems like if they would just get an answer, you could be treated, and they aren't getting you the answers. A doctor's job is diagnosis, after all -- once what is wrong has been identified, anyone could look up the suggested treatment or prescription in a book. Again, I'd encourage you to either goose up your slowpoke main doctor to get more serious about the thyroid question, or else find another doctor. A raspberry to the slowpoke, from your friend Annie.

Weighing at the farm is not the same as weighing when we were at the little house. Sunday mornings at the little house, I'd get out of bed, get my shower, and then step onto the scale, all without eating and certainly with nothing on. (I even found out that my glasses added a few ounces, on that scale.) Since we were at the little house during the school year (in other words, no relaxed summertime living there), there wasn't much leisure even on Sundays. And the digital scale would tell me with [at least some] precision whether I was up or down, improving the accuracy of week-by-week weight comparisons.

At the farm, however, I have two choices of scales: the dusty, cracked one in the master bath, which I have learned not to even step on any more, and the one I can't read that easily, in the guest bath. We sometimes sleep in and sometimes get up at 6 am. (Because it's summer.) I usually wear my long nightgown and slippers around the farmhouse well into the morning, and go downstairs upon awakening and have a cup of coffee with my husband, before it occurs to me that oh, yeah, it's Sunday, and I go weigh in fully dressed. The guest-room scale does have those markers you can set, and I set one three weeks ago. In these conditions (two cups of coffee in my stomach and wearing nightgown and slippers) I did weigh myself this morning, and my weight is right exactly where the marker is set from three weeks ago. This suggests that if I had energetically gotten up and run to the scale before drinking at least 16 ounces of liquid, and without any clothes, glasses or slippers, I might be down a pound. But I'm not gonna bet on it! lol All I can say for sure is that I'm not up, compared to three weeks ago.

We move into the new house in about a week and a half. Sometime in the unpacking, I'll find our digital scale and get back into a normal Sunday routine. Right now, ehh. Too much going on with the selling of our other house to focus on weight, except that I do keep in the forefront of my mind not to eat too much junk.

In the sale of our little house, the inspection came up with a couple of unexpected items. They want to know if there is footing under the foundation of an addition (how would I know? They're the inspectors, and presumably crawled around under the house). They also want an engineering report from when our builder cut into a truss five years ago to put our furnace in the attic. I am sure there is no engineering report. I also know there has been no roof failure in the meantime even when we had five inches of snow standing on it for half the winter, and I think the buyers are just gaming the system in hopes of getting a price break. So this morning, I got up early, and left a lengthy message for the builder who did the work five years ago, explaining that our house sale seems to be delayed and asking for this information if he has it. (Ha, ha. The remodel was in 2012 and 2013, what kind of recordkeeping do builders do?) I hate this kind of thing, and have other stuff to do.  :P

Son is asking for a grey kitten, since our new kitten (attained earlier this summer) is lonely. Gotta say, a kitten search would be a lot more fun to concentrate on.

Hope everything works well for you, Barb, and that everyone has a good week!

You're right Annie, they aren't getting the answers, except they did get the answer for H Pylori and then prescribed the wrong treatment... even *I* could look that up easily enough.  Everything I read says "2 antibiotics (usually clarithromycin and Amoxicillin) and a PPI for 14 days" but they only prescribed Amoxicillin alone along with PPI for 10 days... If Clarithromycin and Amoxicillin for 14 days didn't kill it previously, why would they think Amoxicillin alone for a shorter period is going to do the job???  I questioned this and they refused to change the treatment.  So now I've had, what I consider a useless course, of antibiotics, thus increasing my chances of getting C Diff somewhere along the way while I'm getting this treated...

At least the gastroenterologist didn't waste time - they went straight to the endoscopy, but I'm almost having second thoughts about that, as well, since I'm not really sure of what they're going to be looking for.  I'd like them to be looking for things like celiac, etc but since I haven't had a consultation, I doubt that will be in the cards.  I might call in today and ask exactly what he'll be doing/looking for while he's in there, then I can express my own thoughts.

In addition, my pcp didn't wait around once they got the result of the ultrasound either; it's just unfortunate they took so long getting started with the whole process.

I'm really just tired of doctors not listening to me when I speak to them.  In addition, I have to fill out a questionnaire every time I go into my pcp's office and if they really paid attention, they'd see that I've marked the same symptoms for numerous visits now but they keep ignoring them.  Along with that, if they knew anything about thyroid disorders, they'd know that everyone of the symptoms I display are often symptoms of too low thyroid hormones... The biggest problem is that every doctor I see takes one look at my thyroid test resuls and says the same thing: "your thyroid levels are *fine*..."

So it sounds like you're holding your own, even if you're weighing on an old scale you can't read very well... lol   I'm not sure it matters whether we have a digital scale or not, as long as it's something that gives a number... just look at how much mine fluctuates on the digital.

I do hope you get everything sorted with the sale of your house.  I agree that it sounds like the inspection is a lot of busy stuff looking for excuses to pay less money...  I hope you find a way not to let them do it.  The builder should be able to come with an engineering report of sorts that will satisfy the situation...

You know that kittens do need company, don't you?   :-)  I hope you find a gray one your son likes; I'm sure it shouldn't be too difficult.  Of course, the puppy might not like having another kitty around to compete with.  lol

I'm off to pick up the kit for my CT scan on Wednesday, as well as check into new homeowner's insurance this morning.  The cost of our policy has increased by approximately $300+/yr for the past several years in spite of our never having made a claim in the 14 yrs we've had this policy, even in the years we've had hurricanes... I know, we're paying for claims made by others...  :-)
You're paying for living where you live, I think. The insurance company will just assume it's a matter of time. It's like life-insurance rates as one ages ... we aren't paying for ourselves per se, we're paying for what insurance companies think will happen to the specific group of people that we are in. Good luck finding better insurance. :)
We didn't find any different insurance, though we did ask for quotes.  We got an e-mail saying that we're already insured by the best game in town for the property we have - acreage with outbuildings...

Yes, we do pay for living where we live and it's true that insurance company assumes that it's only a matter of time before we get hit - take your choice whether that will be a tornado or hurricane, since our area is famous for both...  I think it also has to do with people who think nothing of filing a claim for the least little thing, even if insurance doesn't cover it due to deductibles or whatever... they think that if something goes wrong they need to file a claim, whereas we go out of our way to avoid filing a claim, unless it's something big, which is why the last claim we filed was after the hurricanes in 2004 when we had to have our roof replaced, but that was with a company prior to getting this insurance.

Oh well, it is what it is and as we wait for Hurricane Dorian to decide whether she's going to  nail us or go on by, we realize there's nothing we can do about it, right now. Once we're in the clear, we'll talk to our agent and see if there's anything we can do to possibly lower the bill a bit...

I should never post my weight when I first post this thread if it's early in the morning... I'm down 1 pound since posting... that means I have a 1.1 pound gain over last week and that may diminish over the next couple of hours...
