Question to the forum.

Hello all,
I first wanted to say that it has been a pleasure interacting with all of you in this forum.  I have definitely enjoyed answering your gastroenterology questions.

A few of you have emailed me about possibly lifting the 2 question/day limit and going to a pay-per-question format similar to the dermatology and family practice forum.  I wanted to consider the opinion of the forum before making any decision.

The other option would be to leave the forum as is (2 questions/day) and any urgent questions can be directed to my private service (kevinmd_) or to the answersoft.com site.

If there is anything I can do to improve, please feel free to email me (***@****).

Please let me know what you think about leaving the forum as is (2 questions/day) or going to a pay-per-question (unlimited questions/day) format.

Thanks,
Kevin, M.D.

I experience some numbness in right finger(s) only (index-pointer).  As of yesterday or this weekend I now experience some noticeable stiffness in two of my toes next to big toe.  Today I do not fee this.  I get darting prickle pains in my head and other places in my body.  Now I experience muscle pains.  I go walking on my lunch hour and sometimes my knee seems like it wants to give -- it happens to both legs.  Recently a muscle in my leg went through severe muscle spasm.  I actually watched it 'til it stopped - felt like an out-of-body experience.  I also seem not to be able to control my body temperature --I suffer from extreme cold or heat.  What's going on.

A couple of years ago I was bitten by something.  I was barefoot in the grass and fell asleep.  I awakened to the bite which hurt a little and iched a lot.  It was constant.  Felt like something lansed me.  To this day I have a lump from that bite and it still iches and hurts.  It is also growing and becoming a problem for me to wear certain shoes.  It's located on the instep of my left foot.  The lump looks like a tumer, but it's from a bite.  Please diagnose.

Kevin,

Sorry to slam on you also, but I too like the board better without your "professional" opinion. I think this board has more to do with sharing your experiences, your frustrations, your pain & even your successes. Your answers are pretty much textbook lines that anyone researching symptoms can come up on line anyway, free of charge. You always end with the fact that your opinion shouldn't take the place of an actual doctor's visit, so...what good is your answer? I am not saying that your answers are wrong, but you can't diagnose someone by 2 sentances, so what is the point of asking?

I faithfully checked this board every night when my daughter's gallbladder was giving her fits...asking questions, seeking opinions & just enjoying conversation with people that understood & were not sick of talking about being sick...because it DOES consume your life & sometimes the people you live with don't want to hear about it or talk about it. I've been able to answer a few questions that have been similar to my daughter's...as she has now had her GB removed & that whole deal. i know that there are people out there that are interested in how she is doing & I can no longer post an update as the "limit" has always been reached...but somehow,...the same people keep posting over & over with new questions..I don't get it.

I also am wondering how some other's are doing...like "lillibet", you had your GB out & have been so sick....how are you?  I think it is important to have it actually posted...as I don't always have time to write e-mails personally..& maybe someone is going through the exact same thing & didn't realize it..just reading questions & answers helps. And sometimes, reading how bad some people have it, makes you feel better that you are at least not that sick..

So...I am pretty sure that my opinion isn't going to change how this board runs...but I am pretty disappointed that the format has changed. I feel bad for the ones out there that might have benefitted from all the personal experience represented here.

P.S. My daughter is doing well. she occasionally has to make a run for the bathroom...I will pass on the info that some have suggested on trying low carbs...& update you further if I have an opportunity. In the meantime...all of you that are looking for answers...hang in there! Miss chatting with you all...

I couldn't agree with you more.
I started to leave this board too----then thought maybe I could be of some (free) help to others here if they post inside of a (free) reply. (Because I don't think Kevin answers any of the free posts).

I posted a few days ago (about 'fearing liver failure', above)...and put a link to Methodist hospital in Houston.
The reason I did that, was because of our own experience with liver failure.....and because Methodist is the ONLY liver center in Houston with a liver dialysis machine.
They removed my post.

This post may get removed too. (?)
Hope not.
This board is getting in a sad shape.

again it is good to hear from you ,i posted on the liver question in responce to them removing you post ,i said the same thing, they may remove my responce to you ,and the only reason i see them doing that is because truth hurts!!and some people  simply can't take it !! you are doing a good deed by helping the ones that can not afford the fee ,and you are correct kevin or what ever his or her actual name is ,is not responding to the non paid questions .that is the very reason i said the oath doesn't mean diddly any more.hope you stay we all need all the info we can get ,god bless, and  stay strong.wishing you well.

tasha, i could not agree with you more but as you can see they have yet to respond to the  members that have posted in protest of this action .which not even 2wks ago we were told it would remain free only to see a few days later that they started the fee of 15 $. it is sad because a lot of people that can not pay this fee will be left out .it always holds true if you are the less fortunate you are left behind, but as you can see they are content with the money isue and to hell with their oath . at the least as you said they could put a seperate post area for patient to patient ,but they wont  because they are afarid we will answer the question for them and they wont get their ungodly 15$.it is so sad as i said before that human suffering takes a back seat to making money .as if they don't already make enough off of us ( patients ) you would think they would want to give something back to the persons that have given them so much .but that is life so they think ,i always say becareful of what you put out in this world it may find it's way home . i am so glad you are getting better may god bless you in staying well. i started to leave this sight because of the greed involved but there is still a lot of people that visit this sight with questions they can't afford to pay for i will continue to help as best i can through my own health exp.may be i can give emotional suport if nothing more .god bless. wishing you well

i started posting quite awhile ago with pain so bad it was unbearable, and with the help and advice and support from so many people on this site, i have finally recieved and answer and am hopefully on my way to a pain free year.  I came in here to let everyone know......and lo and behold it will cost me $15 dollars, or just attach it to someone else's question.  Thats $5 more than my copay to see my DR.  When we are hurting so bad, sometimes it would help to post a question, at 2am in the morning and have someone respond with help support and well wishes.  I say have an area where you pay for a response from an MD, and have an area where you can post and get responses from people who have "Been There"
Just my humble opinion.

kevin,or to whom ever made this choice , it makes my heart heavy to see that you guys would put money above the needs of human life .this forum should not have been started on a  free level if you had no intention of remaining so .from reading some of the post you guys have hurt a lot of patients doing this, and it would seem to me that would hit home rather hard. i was going to leave this forum but i will check back from time to time to answer a few questions. (if i can) i have had many digestive probs and surgeries through out my life time maybe i can help in some small way ,i am not a doctor as you are, and my opion would be based soly upon my personal exp.but at least it's more than your forum is willing to give .the little time you or other doctors had to give for helping others was god sent as you can tell by your members post .but from what i see that must mean little or nothing sense you have not even so much as responded to the comments of your members .you ask the opion of the forum several days back they gave you the answer that they wished for it to remain free for the 2 questions per day and from the post you returned in reference to that it stated you would .(that was with out doubt a lie) so regarding my statement above (god sent )he doesn't have a lot to do with it (does he? )it is simply  all about money as with everything in this world today mostly the medical field, and i have been wrapped up in it long enough to know .i still wish you well ,but put simply ,who ever desided this ,shame on you !!!i'm  not sure  who made the statement about you can make a co pay of 20$ and actually see a doc and it simply does not make sense to pay 15$ online to get just a reply .i could not have put it better myself not to mention most people simply can not afford it .i wish you well in finding a new forum that you can get sound advice, but please watch out for the quacks .they can without doubt do more damage than good.may god bless us all with good health so we do not have to endure such treatment from thoes that are so very narow minded and money hungry (i guess the oath doctors take doesn't mean **** any more!!!!!) .and make so much money on the sufferings of others. wishing you well

Cindy:

Just a brief note to thank you for the invaluable service you are providing. The addition of the MD to this site is a tremendous benefit. I understand how frustrating it must be to provide a selfless service without recognition, or worse yet, to be critisized for your generous works. While I am not a frequent financial contributor to MedHelp, I would appreciate it if you would remind us how we may make contributions to help support this tremendous resource.

With best personal regards,

SUBJECT:  WHY WE CANNOT OFFER UNLIMITED QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Dear Friends,

Med Help is a labor of love for it's founders, who know well the fear and confusion that comes with the diagnosis of a serious illness. Med Help International is dedicated to "leveling the playing field", by giving anyone with an Internet connection, access to the best medical experts and information.

We achieve this via our online Medical Forums.  For example:

Our Heart Forum gives people access to cardiologists at the #1 Heart Center in America (The Cleveland Clinic Heart Center)

Our Respiratory Disorders Forum gives people access to the #1 Hospital in America for treatment of respiratory disorders (National Jewish Medical & Research Center)

Both of these organizations are paying their physicians and medical professionals to answer your questions, as a good will gesture. We are incredibly grateful to have their support!

In the Gastroenterology Forum, Dr. Kevin Pho has graciously volunteered his expertise to answer your personal gastro-related questions.

Med Help receives no income from these and numerous other forums.

In other forums on Med Help, we charge a fee for each question posted.  We do this in order to attract and retain highly qualified physicians to answer your questions.  Med Help receives only a small portion of this money, which is used to  cover our escalating costs. For instance, in the past 2 years, our bandwidth costs have quadrupled, due to the large number of people using our services.  Last month, Med Help welcomed more than one million individuals, who viewed more than 12 million pages on our website.  Our cost for bandwidth alone is more than $500 each month, yet in an average month, donations are less than $75 from individuals who use our services.

Recently, we have been receiving e-mail from people who tell  us we are "greedy" and "selfish" for not allowing unlimited questions and access to our forums. We would like nothing better than to open all of our forums to unlimited numbers of questions and comments, so that ALL in need have access.  We KNOW how frustrating the limitations are, but the reality is that substantial funding is needed to achieve this goal.

We hope this answers all of your questions and we want you to know that we are working hard to raise the necessary funds.

HEY CINDY, YOUR IDEA WOULD BE INDIVIDUAL TO INDIVIDUAL. OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION WOULD NOT BENEFIT FROM THE ANSWERS. SOME PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO BE BOMBARDED WITH ALOT OF EMAILS THIS WAS EASY FOR US AND BENEFIAL TO SOMEONE WHO MIGHT BE SHY, SCARED, OR OVERWHELMED TO POST. PLEASE RECONSIDER

Please explain what you mean by the patient-to-patient forum...is there one for specifically gastro issues? the BEST part of this board is the support and information from other people that have BEEN there...(no offense..but knowing about something is not the same as EXPERIENCING something)

At this point there is no way to ask another memeber how they are doing or give an update on your own situation without just "attaching" to someone else's question.

One of the questions today was what to expect from a HIDA scan..ALOT of the members can answer that one personally..& not every hospital does it the same. My daughter had 2, at different hospitals, 6 weeks apart. They were only remotely similar. If that person had not been one of the first 2 questions, she wouldn't have gotten any answers..& her question is valid one, but maybe even answered better by forum members than by a doctor. Dr Kevin..have YOU ever had a HIDA scan?

My oldest son broke his right femur in a skydiving accident. There is a wonderful site out there www.mybrokenleg.com for any one with a broken leg...great stories, advice, etc...believe it or not...after almost 2 years my son still maintains contact with some of the members from this group.

Members can post to their hearts delight....I wish this one was the same..

Hello,
I have been informed that the question limit will stay in place in its current form due to cost and resource limitations.  The Patient-to-Patient Network located on the home page offers an alternative source of patient support.

Thanks for all of your comments and concerns regarding this issue.

Thanks,
Kevin, M.D.

Thanks, Kevin. The MD response to the first two questions per day plus additional room for posts per day among list members and visitors sounds like a good compromise.

Perhaps eventually there can be a mechanism where the two daily questions you respond to are not the first two posts, but the first two posts that are directed to you specifically.

Thanks again.

Hello - thanks again for all the comments.

I am working with the supervisors to lift the question per day restriction.  Until we obtain more resources, I can answer the *first two* questions posted per day - all other urgent questions can be answered via my private service, or it can be re-asked the next day.

I think that this will be an acceptable solution.

Thanks,
Kevin, M.D.

Dr. Kevin & Friends,
Is it possible to have TWO forums--one which is moderated by Dr. Kevin and has a 2-question/day limit and the other which is a "Suppport" forum in which unlimited numbers of questions, comments, support & feedback can be posted.  That's how WebMd.com handles the differing needs of folks with the limited time & resources of the medical professionals.  I'm not sure about the logistics, but think it would meet a LOT of needs, if it could please be considered.

Hello,
Thanks for all the input - I have also received several emails.  For now, we will leave the forum as is.  I will continue to answer your questions as completely and quickly as I can (usually within a few hours during the weekdays).

Once again, thank you for the opportunity to address your gastroenterology concerns.

Sincerely,
Kevin, M.D.

I agree with Robette.  The nice thing about this forum was that you could share your experiences with others that have similar problems and not have to pay for it. I have noticed much less response from forum members.  This in turn does not leave much room for dialogue. Sure, for those who want to pay for a professional opinion, that option should be available. Just please don't limit questions to 2 per day.

HI, I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO POST FOR DAYS NOW AND CAN'T. I APPRECIATE THE INPUT FROM THE DR.KEVIN BUT LIKE OTHERS I CAN AND WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE IMPUT FROM THE OTHERS IN THE FORUM. I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY FOR QUESTIONS. PERHAPS THOSE WHO WANT YOUR EXPERTISE CAN POST TO YOU PERSONALLY AND THAT WOULD GIVE THOSE OF US TIME AND SPACE TO TALK TO THE OTHER MEMBERS. THANKS FOR ASKING FOR OUR INPUT.

I agree to leave it at the 2 question a day, instead of a pay-per-question. I believe it's the lesser of the 2 evils. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that Kevin is helping out on this forum, but I can never post a question, even if I stay up just past midnight to post. I respect and value Kevin's advice and responses, but with this new limit, many people are getting passed over, people with problems and questions that may not be serious enough to get an urgent answer. It may be that all they want is for some advice from the other forum participants, or to give an update. The 2 question a day limit is very confining, but I still believe it's better than going to a pay-per-question. I'd never be able to afford it because I'm trying to put myself through school, and there are other people also who cannot afford it. This way it's still somewhat accessible to everyone.

Hi Kevin:

My preference would be the two questions per day, with urgent overflow requests directed elsewhere. This enables the forum to serve two purposes; solicit your input, and to post in general to the members of the list.
