Dog Constantly Licking Lips, Swallowing, and Trying to Throw Up

About an hour or more ago, my dog (2 year old mutt around 60 lbs) was chewing on her bone and she suddenly started licking her lips and swallowing. My husband and I thought she may have gotten something stuck in her throat. She drank a lot of water and ate about a cup of her food and has licked the carpet and tried to eat other things (i.e. a bookmark) a few times. She has been doing this constantly and goes between laying down and pacing around the living room. Her breaths seems very shallow. Also, several times she has seemed like she is trying to throw up but nothing comes out. If she was truly vomiting, then something would have to be coming up because we know she has food and water in her stomach. It's this horrible retching sound that I've never heard come out of a dog. She's clearly distressed. What could this be? Where we live, it's very late at night and a weekend so our normal vet is closed.

I hope all was well. And I am very sorry I was not on here 16 hours ago (when this apparently was posted) I hope she is ok.
The symptoms sounded to me like Bloat, which is a great emergency.

Some time has passed since you post, hope your dog is doing better.

Giving a dog a bone has it risks, and should not be done I believe.  Is there anything missing form the bone the dog was chewing, like a chip gone?  If so it may be a piece of bone stuck in the throat..

You mention a book mark, I take it your dog is prone to eating "stuff" - anything small that is usually in the dogs reach that is missing, a too small toy or piece of toy?

If the choking doesn't subside you may want to consider looking for a animal emergency facility.  This is something good to know about in any case.   We have one in our area, but happily I have never needed it and I would have to look for it on the web to find it in an emergency - so I am not emergency ready myself.
