Cushings, Old dog, When to put down?

Anyone else have an old dog who is currently sick with Cushings? We want hold onto him, but don't want him suffering. Any suggestions about when it is time to ........ have him put down?  (Hard to even think about.)  We opted not to have him treated, because of the side effects of meds. We are giving him Supraglan, a homeopathic mixture which seems to help. He is still eating, walks stiffly, and drinks water excessively. Several days ago he apparently had a seizure; he collapsed and his bowels moved. His breath was shallow and rapid and we thought he was dying. Within about 10 minutes, he was back to "normal." Later in the day he dropped again. These 'seizures' have not reoccured since. Today we took him for his daily, leisurely walk. He goes back and forth between being content and happy to anxious, panting and near-death. It is a hard time. We love this  boy so much. Thanks for letting me vent.

If your dog still has content and happy times I would enjoy them, and wait.  The fact he still goes for walks is good, take him for rides, anything he likes to do,    take each day as it comes, and give him lots of love. Try to stay calm in front of him so he doesn't get scared.   Our dog was  on meds, but  got to the point there were no good times, we then knew it was time.

What was your homeopathic formula? Our dog is almost 6 and has cushing. He is not doing well on the meds (vetrolyn) and every day seems to get worse and worse.

He still wags his tail when we get home and still is eating but it's hard to know that he is in pain and not doing well. We have another appointment with the vet this week to come up with a plan.

Hi i hope your buddy is doing ok.In my opinion, and i work beside a vet as vet tech daily (i love my job!) if the tail is still wagging, and your still getting those great sloppy kisses, then its not time.i refuse to entertain the idea of ever ending a dogs (who could fighting it himself and isnt ready to go)life til he is suffering all the time. You are doing the right thing by keeping him pampered, giving him the things he loves, and just being there with him.I also just wanted to make sure you knew what to do in the event of a seizure that lasts more than 4 minutes...his body temp can rise and make sure he doesn't choke on tongue...keep loving him the way you are,he is very lucky to have such a caring owner

Just noticed that my reply to you didn't post. But I want to thank you for your comments. Our Buddy is still having more good days than bad, so for now the decision has been postponed. We started him on a homeopathic formula for his Cushings and we are amazed at the difference. Also, we are pampering him to the max! Thanks for your advice to stay calm in front of him--helps. I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for taking time to respond to my question.

Hi Em, hope your furbaby is doing well!! Was curious about what homeopathic formula you started your furbaby on and is it still working? We are in the process of getting the cushing's diagnosis with our furbaby. She was our healthy girl, we have one that has seizures and it's tough to watch him. Would love any advice and info you may be able to offer. As for the seizures,  I just love on and talk calmly to him until he is thru, then when it's over, outside to go potty because he always has to poop immediately after and yes, sometimes it happens during the seizure.  All we can do in life is try to love them as much as they love us.
