Dog addicted to treats.

I don't know what to do about my Miniature American Eskimo shes addicted to treats and it's not part of her routine. It's not like I have a time or day or use them as a reward after she eats or come back in from outside it's random when shes gets them. She also gets them during training or when we go for a walk. I have no set pattern but she will wake me up in the middle of the night and walk me over to the counter where her treats are kept and whine till she gets one. She will do this all day and night whenever she wants a treat she'll while till she gets it. I try to ignore her as long as possible but then she gets the other dog whining and I don't want her to train the other one this behavior. How do I get her to stop? It's bad enough the other dog is a neurotic Chihuahua I don't need the little one take up my Eskies issues.

Hi,
I have a boxer that is addicted to treats. Milkbones to be specific.
I see that you mention that you do not have a routine that results in treats.
I also see that you mention, that your dog does have a routine, and it sounds like she has you well trained...! Smart Dog...!
Anyway, all kidding aside, My advice to you, is to set a routine for her treats, and then stick to it. This is what I have had to do for my dog. I only give her Milkbones in the morning..( after my first cup of coffee )....and then again at night, before we go to sleep. The only other time she gets them, is when she is "being good" and allowing guests to enter and leave the house, without her going after their legs...!   Sure, she still tries to get me to give her more, but I know I have to be strong, and ignore her pleas.
If I don't, she will gain WAY TOO MUCH weight...!
I have to say, that the only other reasons I can think of that a dog is addicted to treats, is because she is not being fed enough, or she may have Cushings Disease.  Cushings Disease will cause dogs to want to eat all the time.  I hope that she does not have Cushings, but it is something to keep in the back of your mind, and possibly discuss with your vet the next time you bring your dog for an exam.
Good Luck with the treat training....I hope a regular routine for treats will work for both of you !

I believe I got my neighbor’s dogs addicted to milk bones, too! I’m actually very concerned now. I originally got them so they can ease up on me because they barked at me so much. Now I’m their favorite person in the world. They act so neurotic when they see me because I’m the one that gives them the treats. I really am going to work on a weaning schedule. I’ve grown concerned.

Just a dry dog treat like milk bones and gravy bones. I also home make my own since sometimes I cant find ones small enough for my chihuahua. They also get Greenies and pizzles which is like a raw hide. I like a treat they can gnaw on or at least requires chewing gotta keep there teeth strong. My chihuahua is hypoglycemic so I watch what they get fed. But I will double check the cheap dry milk bones I get, thank you for letting me know.

I have 2 vizslas that act like they are addicted to milk bones, too.  I have stopped buying them in the past but after a period I buy again.  This will be the last time I buy them as my dogs behaviors are getting more and more neurotic.  My husband usually gives them one in the morning around 7:30-8, but the dogs have been whining to get out of their kennels earlier and earlier, now 5:30 am!  I was also using them to incent my dogs to come back in the house after going potty because we live on a lake and their was something on my neighbors beach that they were interested in.  It worked!  Now they run to the door right after going potty.  New problem is they want to go potty constantly to get their reward.  I will have to switch to some other treat.  MILK BONES are addictive!

What kind of treats are we talking about?  If your feeding a moist, grocery store treat, they are designed to be addictive.....A large amount of sugar (Dangerous for dogs) is added on purpose......Dogs get addicted to the sugar! Therefore, the company gets to sell you more of their product......This is intentional & sugar should not be found in any high quality dogfood or treat! Check your labels.......

If we're talking chicken jerky treats made by ANY company, they also are addictive, but very dangerous & toxic and should not be fed, period......Karla

Thanks for the advice. I can try a routine with the treats. I'm sure it's nothing serious cuz I keep a bowl full of kibble out all the time my Chihuahua can get a little hypoglycemic and I only need to fill it once a week. Also both of my dogs are optimal weights according to the vet on there last visits.Hopefully A routine will fix her right up.
