Lethargic Husky,not eating, No diagnosis

Our dog, Nayana, is a 9 y/o Siberian Husky who is very lethargic, has stopped eating and has lost quite a bit of weight...close to 30 lbs since she was last a the vet this Summer. She has very loose, close to water, stool and is now vomiting. We've taken her to the vet and received no diagnosis. Blood work shows low protein, normal platelet count and high WBC count. They've given her an anti-biotic injection and two anti-biotics for us to administer at home, she was kept at their office for 4 days to administer sodium chloride IV. We began to syringe feed at home and remain doing such today. She finished the prescriptions they gave us, a few days ago, but still wouldn't eat so we suggested a b-12 injection to the vet. That seemed to perk her up for a few days, but she still wouldn't eat. After those 3 days, she relapsed and was back to being lethargic and has now stopped drinking water. We have her back on the same meds (Baytril and Metronodizole) and continue to syringe feed but she doesn't seem to be responding to them this time. We're at a loss and don't want to put her down...do you have any suggestions?

Oh, I am so sorry.  I dealt with that in our Greyhound.
Don't know what your plans are but you may check into one of the Yahoo canine cancer groups.

Well the prognosis from vet #2 is lymphoma...they did an ultra sound and checked blood work under the microscope. Not what we wanted to hear :(

Good point on the tick panel.  I seldom think of that as we don't really have them here and my dogs are normally exposed to areas that have ticks.

I agree w/Connie...My first thought was Tick Disease, also....If her Platelet count was normal, how come they want to do a transfusion? Do you know? Is she anemic on testing, too?

What Antibiotics were given? Do you have the names? Has she been vaccinated recently? Just curious....Thanks, Karla

I would seek a second opinion, and ask the vet to run more thorough testing for Tick-borne disease. Sometimes tests give negative results for a few different reasons (even when Tick disease is present) -one of those reasons can be there are many species of organism causing disease.

There's info here:
http://www.vintagegoldens.com/tick.html

And if you scroll down the page, go to "What youy should know about tests for tick-borne diseases."

Then maybe your vet could discuss these things with you?

I am glad she's drinking water. But she could still get dehydrated if she continues to vomit. If you can give her Pedialyte instead (unflavoured) and give it to her in very frequent and small quantities, she may keep that down better. Failing that, even a little honey or maple syrup dissolved in the water (given in very frequent, very small quantities) may help her quite a lot as she cannot eat.

We are taking her to another vet on Friday for a 2nd opinion. We were told by the first vet that based on her blood work she does not have worms or tick borne disease, but those were two additional thoughts we had after the x-ray's came back clear.
Good news, she has began to drink water again today, but is continuing to vomit.
Thank you for your suggestions, I'll let you know what we find out with vet #2...Fingers crossed!

Again, being in Michigan, I would also wonder about heartworms...?

Have you had her checked for tick borne diseases yet..?
That would be one of my first thoughts, being that you live in Michigan.

Thank you. Yes x-rays were taken and didn't show anything obstructing her bowels or any tumors...which was our first thought (cancer). Kidney and Liver enzymes both came back normal, which they said was good. Stool sample was checked we were told...but we weren't told if anything was found in it, although they did give us a liquid de-wormer to administer at home. They suggested taking her to the state university vet hospital for a plasma transfusion but we're already $2k into this and cannot afford to start over elsewhere :(

So sorry to read this.  That is a big weight loss!!
Were stool samples sent out fir analysis? Any x-rays taken?
How was the kidney and liver function?
If it were me, I would be getting a second opinion and soon.
Hope you can get a diagnosis.
