My 2 year old has had high liver enymes almost all of his life. Please help me!!

Please help me. My baby is only 2. He turned 2  in September 2010 and it is just December  1st 2010  He has had high liver enyzmes almost all of his life and also Very low WBC. The Vet has given him just one medication. It is a natural one. He also has arthritis and is in a lot of pain so he is on tramadol. I think that is how it is spelled. Anyway he never acted like a puppy. He always had no energy and seems depressed. He won't eat. I have to hand feed him and it is a stuggle. I have wondered if he will never ger well and I sometimes think I should put him down because I think I am being selfish by keeping him. I am also very ill and he is always with me. My heart is breaking so much. I feel as though I will die if I lose him. Can anyone please help me? Does anyone know what could be wrong? My husband won't take him for a second opinion because he says we have already spent a fortune on him and me for medical expenses. I love him so much!  I would do anything to help him!!

Thank you!!

Hi Laurie & welcome.......I see your other post, too. Here's what I want you to do:

Either, go to the opening page and post this question in the "Ask A Vet" Forum. You want the "Animal-Health" General section.... Or scroll down to the bottom of this page. On the bottom right you will see "Experts Forum". You again want in "Animal-Health" General section.....

Post this identical question in that forum....There is a wonderful Vet, "Dr. Carol" that will help you....It will take a day or so.....Make sure you post any tests results or bloodwork results with your question...She will be able to help you better with any information you can tell her......I will be back to ask you a few things, too....

Just go ahead and put your question there for starters.......Karla

Laurie, Look right here---> on this side of page....See the Related EXPERT Forums?--->

Click on Animal Health-General......That is the ASK A Vet Forum......She probably will answer questions tomorrow.....Put your question in...Remember to list any bloodtest results, etc. I promise she will answer you....

My dog had Low WBC & Elevated Liver Enzymes not long ago.....Found by accident during routine blood panel....We were actually at the Dr. for his Acupuncture treatment for Disk Disease.....

Turned out, he had Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever.....Very rare!  This is an indoor dog that rarely goes anywhere....I have found a tick or two, but that's all...Never expected that, though!

Anyway, that's why I ask about the test? What did your new Vet say? Surely, they have some clue to what's going on.....Did he/she offer any suggestions or different treatment? Please tell me that they are going to pursue a diagnoses.....

Did the Vet offer medication to help his Liver....All Vets sell one....They are the same drug, but made by different companies......It's a once a day pill & they DO work........I'm surprised that they did not offer you one for this guy....The name of the one my Vet sells is Denosyl....

Hope your feeling better & I hope your puppy gets well.....Do you still have the Yorkie, Too?

Check in when you can.......Karla

Karla,
Again I am sorry I am late getting back to you. Both my dog and myself are very ill so some days I can't get out of bed. It's funny you say Spondylosis because I have Anklosing spondylitis. It has ruined my spine and my organs.

My dogs name is Malty and he is a Maltese. I had always wanted one for many years when my youngest was watching Sesame Street years ago I saw one and wanted one but they were hard to find and very expensive so right after {a year} we got my Yorkie, Sadie to help me deal with my disease. I saw a Maltese for 5 hundred the same price we paid for Sadie. We really couldn't afford another dog but I couldn't believe it when I saw one for that price. For 18 years I looked in the newspaper daily for a Maltese and I hardly ever saw them and if I did they were a couple thousand so I had to have him. He is very sweet but has been sick since we got him and I wonder if it was bad breeding. :( I was too sick to go Thusday and Friday. I thought my husband was taking him to another Vet but actually it was the same office but another Vet. His blood work came back bad again. This time it was mostly very low WBC, and the high liver enzymes. I know he has had all his shots and has been tested for everything under the sun so I don't think it would be Tick Born Diseases (Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever, etc but I can find out.
He seems so depressed and hides all the time. I'm sure it is because he doesn't feel well. It  really is tearing me up.

I want to pick you as the best answer {the only one- but the best one too} :)
but I'm not sure how to do that. I also can't figure out how to ask the Vet.
I am going to try and figure it out.

Thanks again for all your help. You are so kind to care and want to help me. I truly appreciate that.

Take care,,
Laurie~

Hi Laurie.....
Oh, I'm so glad your husband went for a second opinion.....What kind of dog is your guy? What's his name?

I'm curious about the outcome of the new testing......I didn't realize that Addisons Disease could strike in a dog this young......Nor did I know that it's this painful!  When I get time, I will be doing some research on it!

I was leaning more towards "Spondylosis" which is a very painful condition of the spine OR any of the Tick Born Diseases (Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever, etc.) which can cause the symptoms your describing......Make sure you look over you records and see if he has had a bloodtest for tick diseases...If you cannot figure it out, take your records to the new Vet....She will be able to tell if he's been tested.....I definitely would rule this out, first!

I know it's terrible to watch your guy be sick and not be able to figure out why....I still want you to post your question w/ bloodwork results on the ask a Vet forum....I promise that Dr. Carol will answer you...She's very kind!

I'm sorry your sick, too.....I hope you get some answers tomorrow.........I'll be anxious to hear what happens.....Take care & keep us updated......Karla

P.S. Maybe the Tramadol is hurting his stomach where he doesn't feel like eating.....Just a thought....I will check that out, too.  ;)    Hang in there!!!!!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your kindness and help. I did get my husband to get another opinion today and they took xrays and more blood tests. In 6 months we have spent just under one thousand dollars and over 12 thousand on me out of pocket and I am disabled and my husband was forced to retire early so this is really hurting us but all I want is for him to be okay. We are taking him back in tomorrow for more tests. She thinks it may be Addisons disease and he does have more arthritis in his spine. I pray she can help him. I have been heart broken over this and I think I will get all his blood work and ask this wonderful Vet  here also. Hopefully we can get him well!!
Thanks again so much for your kindness. I truly appreciated it.
Your baby is darling. I hope we can stay in touch!!

Thanks again!!
