My dog died Suddenly Last Night. WHY??

I had a ten pound 8 year old mini doxie. Yesterday evening she started to seem lathargic and won't eat. About midnight  she seemed to be unable to walk and her gums were a yellowish white. At 2am she was gone. Before last evening she was her normal self, running around and teasing the cat. I don't understand what happened. Any ideas please let me know. Thank you.

Hey Guys, just thought I'd share. My Boxer Glory Girl that I had for 11 years was the most amazing creature that I ever had the honor of knowing, just like all of your beautiful dogs. I'm responding to the person who wrote this email because they had a boxer too and I know they feel my pain. I just wanted to say THANK YOU and put that out there, whoever reads this, love them and THANK THEM as much as you can, they go so fast. I saw and spent Christmas with her and she died in an instant today. Glory Girl, there will never be another dog as kind, friendly and loving. My god you are missed honey. I will see you again someday.

I lost my 8 old boxer last night, she was feeling and looking normal for most of yesterday than she came down stairs and laid on the rug near the front door. Not much later, she began to labor in her breathing, My mom seen her doing shallow breaths so my mom tolkd her she was loved and a good girl then she let out her last breath, I was not not home and only found out about her passing an 1 hour 45min after the fact. I am devastated that I was not around to say good bye and thanking her for being there when I needed her th most. She was a one of kind type of dog who loved everyone. I will miss her terribly......The vet thinks she had internal bleeding but from what not too sure. Her gums were white. I elected not get an autopsy since it does not change the fact she is gone.

So sorry for the loss of your little doxy.
It was so sudden! The pale gums suggest anemia. The only way to tell for sure is a necropsy done by your vet. I love dachshunds and have 2 at home. What a loss :(

So so sad. there will never be another like her. Treasure her memory.

Someday you may want another. Give it some time. Do not act on impulse. Do not feel guilty. She would want you to have another canine companion. Do so when you are ready as a new puppy will help ease your pain.  My thoughts are with you.

Lost our family dog last night, he was a resilient little guy (yorkie) like literally he wasn't bothered by anything.  He had developed a lump on his chest maybe two years ago.  We all knew what it was and last night was a very unreal night... i could tell that something wasn't going right with him.. he was very very slow... couldn't move wouldn't lift up his head or anything. He had erratic breathing and it wasn't too long before he was laying on his side arms stretched out but he was still breathing... once we put him in his bed he left us.  As sad as i am, the good times with him for outweigh the last hour of his life.... LOVE YOU MILLENNIUM thanks for 11 years of happiness and laughter.

I am very sorry for your loss.  My Baby died of cancer, he had very pale gums, breathing hard, I took him to his vet - was terminal.  Died last week.  Think of the good times.  I had gotten an"incase" dog.  He is not my Baby, but he keeps some of the grief away.  Take care.

My dog died suddenly this morning.  She was a 5 year old (airdale and pit bull)  she was a very loving, well behaived best friend. This morning she had druell coming out of her mouth which was very visible.  She always had trouble breathing ....since about 12 months old.  She's been sick before and I assumed it was something she ate.  I came out about 10 minutes later and she wasn't breathing.  She was breathing very heavily just before she died.   I'm am so sad....I feel that if I had dignosed her sysmptons earlier, she would still be alive.  I didn't know anything about dog diseases until she died.  I beleive she died of heart failure.  She did have a good life and was loved very much.  I will miss my Tigger.  Rick

My dog might as well be my little sister. Can't describe how we love each other...When a dog you love dies, it's just like any loved one died.

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.  Yellowish-white gums indicate an internal bleeding disorder of some kind.  Pets are very good at hiding when they don't feel well.  This is an instinctive response for them, because in the wild, to be sick is to be prey.  A sick or lame animal is an easy catch for anyone, so they will act what appears to be normal to us until often it is too late for us to help them by the time we notice they are sick.
The only way to tell for sure is to have a necropsy performed.

When my dog became ill, the vet said that dogs of that breed and that age were prone to liver shunts. I don't quite now what that is because it turned out that my little girl had something else, but it stuck in my mind that if you are bleeding inside then it would be a nice peaceful, painless way to go.  Just progressive lethargy and fall asleep.

I'm so sorry for your loss. What a blessing there didn't seem to be any suffering. That is all any of us can ask.

So sorry for your loss. I am not a vet but the symptoms you describe sound like the terrible cancer that killed my dog in 2 months - hemangiosarcoma -- this causes internal bleedings and can cause sudden death. The pale gums are symptom of blood loss.
I am so sorry.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Without asking your vet to do  post-mortem exam, there is no way of determining the cause of death beyond an educated guess.  The light gums are a sign of shock that means something is dangerously wrong, but beyond that I couldn't begin to tell you what caused it.  She may have swallowed something that ripped through her intestines, eaten a poisonous substance or had a twisted section of intestine.

Try to remember all the good years your doxie had with you.  They far outnumber the few hours of suffering at the end.

I'm sorry for your loss.  Unfortunately none of us can tell you what happened to your pet.
Possibly she had an intestional blockage.   You could have the vet perform an autopsy.
