what to do for an open wound that won’t heal?

Our Italian greyhound broke his leg a week ago and required immediate surgery. Two nights post surgery we found him in the kitchen - he’d gotten under his bandages and was licking at the stitches. I took him to the vet the next morning where he was given a topical ointment to apply 1x daily and put on antibiotics. He didn’t manage to get any of the stitches out but it’s been 5 days and the area he licked (between two stitches) is still “open wound” like and not showing any signs of healing. He’s supposed to get his stitches out in 4 days and I worry this will affect that. Any advice on what to do about the wound? He’s been wearing a cone since the licking incident and has not been able to get at the stitches again and we have been diligent about cleaning and changing bandages daily
