Need Help For Biting Puppy

10-12 week old Chi-Mix (maybe chiweenie)... I don't know the age for sure as I got her from the shelter.

She has shown signs of aggression the vet has witnessed, and has nailed me good twice, but that seems to have tapered down as she's become used to her environment and the trust is building. I AM however having a huge issue with the puppy biting. She will be laying on the sofa with me and jumps up and bites my arm. Charges me and jumps towards my face. Bites my side, not to mention the hand. I know this is litter play for her but it hurts!

I tell her "no bite" and offer her a toy... Nope, not interested.
I get up and stand with my back to her in minute time out.
I go into a different and close the door for a minute.
I put her in her time out area for a minute.
I shake a can with pennies in it and a firm "no bite." She charges towards the can.

NOTHING is working and I am at my wits end! I don't want to use a tap on the nose or any other physical admonishment as I don't want her to fear me or my hands.

Anybody reading this have any additional ideas? They are surely welcomed and would be appreciated... This is supposed to be a joyful time, and it is except for this issue.

Thanks.

As for chewing, I have been pretty fortunate that she only shows interest in her toys, so far (knock in wood)... And speaking of wood, all my table legs are metal, and am I ever glad about that! ;)

Yesterday was a better one with the biting... I only had to give a couple gentle "no bite" commands, which were then met with licking were she was biting.

I think the swiftness in which I grabbed her and the loudness of my screaming when she bit at my face the night before (she yelped) may have gotten the message across... Praying such is so.

She can use her mouth to open the crate latch?  Wow!!  Pretty good!!  I thought MY dog was smart for sitting on command.  Ha ha.

When I first brought our pup  home, I was wondering if the puppy madness would ever stop.  This pup had no clue and EVERYTHING looked like a something she needed to chew on.  THAT has gotten better.  So I have hope the puppy nips will too.  Nobody wants a ripped nostril from a nipping puppy for crying out loud!

Is your pup getting her inhibition biting down?

They'll get it.  She sounds so smart, she'll get it and be a great dog, I'm sure.  Lots of luck with your new baby as well!

Thanks for your feedback... My "mama dog" things as per my vet is to roll her on her back and put my hand over her chest and tummy. I may have to add the growl as well! LOL

I do have us enrolled in a puppy obedience class thru my vets office as well. My little one is so smart, it scares me!

This morning I wanted her to "make pee pee" (my command to her) and she was more interested in going back into her crate. I closed the door but didn't latch it, and the next thing I know she has her mouth on the latch and is pulling it open and goes right on in! I'm thinking to myself, how do I get her into movies!

Thanks again, and good luck and best wishes with your little one.

Oh, one other thing that I think is helpful is general training.  I try to work a little bit every day with her.  She now will sit on command with no treat--  (although she gets much praise for it).  When she is doing something she should, I can walk up and say sit.  She will sit, get her praise and then we move on.  it has cut down on her thinking she is in charge.

Hi there.  I recently acquired a new puppy as well who is about 10 weeks now.  Also biting!  Nipping is probably more accurate.  She seems oblivious to some of the normal things recommended to stop this.  No is meaningless to her and things I do to stop her seem to be more of a game to her.  However, I had some success recently with my tone of voice.  When she nips, I move her away from me, stand up and use my best doggy shaming voice and say 'noooo  bite'.  That voice and my action of standing and moving away from her seems to help.  The other thing that seems to have an impact is going to sound weird.  I read about this and tried it and really, my dog notices.  Young pups are used to their mama, right?  Well, what would their mama do?  She'd push them down, hover over them and give a growl.  So, I probably look ridiculous but I do that.  She stops whatever she is doing, looks up to me and does not try to play, bit me or anything of the sort.

just other ideas.  good luck and let us know how it goes!
