I would "shop around" Ask other vets perhaps for quotes on the removal surgery and Lab. costs. The thing is, if it DID happen to be cancer, there is always the possibility that removed -that's that! If caught very early, and it hasn't had chance to spread, removal CAN be a cure!
Of course it could well be benign, in which case there is nothing to worry about. I would suggest a needle-biopsy, which would be cheaper than reoval and biopsy, but have recently been informed by my vet that these are no way 100% accurate in spotting the difference between cancers and benign tumors.
Thank you for your reply. We did take her to the vet who prescribed the antibiotics. When after two weeks it didn't go away we brought her back today and vet wants to remove it and biopsy it, which is very expensive. We take care of our animals but the amount we were quoted is exorbitant; if it turns out to be cancer, we couldn't afford to do any more for her anyway. Monday we plan to try to find out more options and what the prognosis would be for doing nothing, but wondered in the meantime if anyone had information to share so we are better prepared in a discussion with the vet.
Maureen, Have you taken her to a vet? Why are you giving her antibiotics? It could only be a benign skin tumor, especially if it is not changing in size. My Cockers get them all the time. They may grow, very slowly, over time. Is she scratching it? To put your mind at ease, I would have the vet look at it the next time you are in with her.
