SICK PUPPY

Hi All,

My 5 month old lab became sick last week she was off her food for a day or so and eventually she could not even move I brought her to the emergancy vets who put her on a drip and sent her home on Monday not knowing what happended with her if only this emergency vet had over checked her for poisosning then he could have treated her sooner and she may not have been so bad. On Tuesday Morning I decided to bring her to my own vets as she would not eat and I noticed a smell of dry blood from her mouth. He checked her and advised that she has bleeding in her stomach possible but needs to run further tests and that she may have come in contact with rat poison and that he needs to xray her to see if she has a hole in her stomach from this ... He put her on a drip and has given her medication I just have to wait now I am just at a loose end as I dont know what is going to happen to her and was wondering if anyone else had experincecd anythig like this as I dont know how serious this is thanks for any comments I know she is in the best place

I am so sorry to hear about your sick baby. With the Vitamin k and some strong stomache meds she should be fine. You have to believe that all is going to be well.If she has been doing fine for the past few days,Then i wouldnt think that she hasd gotten a large amount...Hopefully.But i am sure that your vet will take the best of care of her.I had a puppy when i was a child that had gotten into some poison. And within an hour of arriving to the vet she was clinging to life she had taken a few bites of it.So judging from what you have said of your puppy i doubt that she had gotten much at all.So i really think that she should make a full recovery.I will be praying for you two.Keep us posted...

You must be so worried! I can imagine.
Ingesting rat poison is pretty serious, but she is in the right place at the moment, and I am sure, receiving the best care.

Rat poison hinders blood-clotting. The antidote is Vitamin K, which I am sure the vet will be giving her. As far as I know, Vitamin K must be continued for a few weeks after recovery.

There is a chance she'll be ok. It does depend on how much she ate. I had a cat who ate a rat which had been poisoned (of course I only found that out later) I thought I was going to lose him, but he was young and strong, and did pull through after the crisis.
So I send you all the positive thoughts I can. Let's hope she pulls through and is ok. She may well be, as she is getting the care she needs now.
