Shaking and scratching ears

We have a beagle-pointer mix who has been shaking her head incessantly and scratching her left ear. A while ago, we took her to the vet, who looked at the ear and told us it was fine. Our dog, though, scratches it until the ear bleeds. The ear itself is very red and a bit scabby, probably from scratching. I can't really detect evidence of ear mites. We have been cleaning her ears about 3 times a week with cleaning solution, though, just in case. I think she also might have polyps in the outer part of her ear.

Does anybody have any experience with anything like this?

Wow- She sounds miserable! Ear problems are Very common in dogs.....Normally, it's food related....However, you must rule out an ear infection, Mites Or Yeast,  first & get treatment for that & then move on.

Ear mites are distinct! They look like coffee grounds.....It's actually not the mites, but the debris they leave behind..

Any dog producing this kind of trauma to the ear needs to be seen by her Vet.

Damage from all the scratching and lead to a Hematoma which causes even more problems.....

Whether it's bacteria, Mites or Yeast----All all treated with different medications....

After thease are ruled out and addressed, you then need to start looking as food being the culprit.....Good luck and let us know....Karla

It may also be a food allergy.  If it's to the point that the ear is bleeding, I would take her into the vet to get examined.  You don't want to run the risk of an open wound getting infected.
