Sudden death in 6 year old lab

Hi,

My 6-year-old lab died this morning. He was with my mom. He was fine yesterday, very playful. Even jumped in my new car last night to sniff around and investigate. The only thing he had was a limp due to jumping up in our fruit tree to grab a persimmon, but had been showing signs of healing. This morning he had his morning feed with my dad before my dad headed to work then went back to sleep with my mom. He played with her, licked her face and she woke up. She went to brush her teeth and heard him making sounds he often does when he's having a bad dream. She went over to him on the bed and he looked at her panicked. He tried to gasp for air twice and then fell limp. She tried to wake him. She said after that he let out some excrements. A nurse who lives next door tried to give him CPR. They took him to a pet clinic down the street and they injected something in his heart and tried to resuscitate. It was too late. We are in quite a state of shock given we lost our 11 year old golden 3 years ago and thought we would have so many more years to come with our current dog. Any ideas as to what happened? He is a little overweight. The vet had said the limp would have a very little correlation with how he died. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. I know my mom believes if there had been someone else with him, something could have done, but I think it all happened to soon for anything to happen.

Hello. I can't really add anything to what others have said, but just wanted to say I am very sorry for your loss. Sudden death is shocking and leaves many unanswered questions. You may never have the answers, but probabilities suggest heart attack. I hope you and your family can reach a stage where you remember all the happy, carefree, adventurous and loving times you shared with your best friend.

Thank you. We are still having a very hard time with it. Started the week out with him, I got a new car and he jumped in it the night before, inspecting it. I kissed him goodnight. He ate his meal in the morning with my dad and went back to bed with my mom like always. Even kissed and licked her. She said within 10 minutes from that he had his attack. Even he didn't know what was going on. Our golden had a lot of health problems and lived until 11. Our lab was so healthy and energetic, barely getting white on his face, just under his chin. We believed we had so many more years with him, yet he was still taken from us. It's more of a shock because it was so sudden and at such a young age.

So sorry.  What a terrible shock.  The only way to possibly know for certain would have been for the Vet to do a necropsy.  It could have been his heart, a stroke, just no way to tell for sure.  Sorry your Mom had to go through this.  They certainly did all they could under the circumstances.
