Did you ever find out the problem??? I have recently rescued a 10 yr old mini schnauzer, though I've known her for her whole life. She started these symptoms with all of her antibiotics and medicine regimens that I had to put her on to get her back to health. She was fine for 2 months, and now, could be once or twice a month. She sleeps it off like you said, but I'm tired of watching her go through this!' EVERYONE ELSES STORIES say vestibular, but these issues last for a few weeks... And like your dog, half a day at most. it's out of nowhere- sometimes mid play... How is your dog? Still going through this? She is in this "spell" currently and that's why I'm frantically searching the Internet. My beautiful, animal loving vet told me the same as you, therefore not taking her immediately to the vet.
Erinn--- These appear to match poisoning symptoms, but I suspect otherwise.... These may be classified as seizures, but they last too long! You need to record one of these episodes to show your Vet!
First, Make sure your feeding a high quality diet w/nothing like dyes, artificial preservatives, by-products, Ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT or Propylene glycol (Used as a moisturing agent). Many low quality pet foods contain these chemicals...All can cause seizures...
I personally would have a Complete blood panel run to look for abnormal Liver values......It's possible that in such a young dog, this is a Liver Shunt!!
Not trying to scare you, but the sooner it's figured out, the better....Let me know what you think, Karla
It sounds as if it could possibly be vestibular syndrome. I would get her checked out by a vet. This causes swaying, dizziness, loss of balance, often vomiting
Portuguese Water Dog. It started in Jan of this year. And no it isn't more frequent after meals.
Any ideas?
What kind of dog? Has this just started? Is it more frequent after a meal????Let us know & thanks, Karla
She is about a year and a half. I took her to the emergency clinic after the first episode in Jan. this year.
They kept her overnight and said she must have eaten something toxic. They gave her pepcid and sent her home the next day.
How old is your dog?
How long has this been going on?
Obviously, lethargy is not normal so you should probably get her in to the vet. Also, trouble with balance and swaying as if she were drunk are also serious issues. Your dog could have an inner ear infection that left untreated could turn into a viral infection that could be fatal.
