What could the swollen lymph node in my dog's neck mean?

On Friday morning, I woke up to my dog shaking and acting strange. After trying to console him, I noticed what appeared to be a lymph node the size of a golf ball of the left side of his face. The swelling extended all the way under his jaw. After bringing him to the vet, she gave him a steroid shot for the inflammation and antibiotics as she suspects that it could be a snake bite (there were no marks that indicated a snake bite, but she thinks that it is a snake bite from the feel and from previous cases). Two days later, he is in better spirits and acting more like himself, but the swelling is still there (the swelling is starting to subside). Could the lymph node possibly be due to something else?
