What's Wrong With My Dog? He's a Shar Pei

My dog takes a few steps and stops takes a few more ect. He has trouble getting up and down and he is excessively panting all the time. Sometimes if you touch his back he yelps. He yelps getting up and cant get up 2 stairs. Going number 2 looks like it might be a problem for him. His whole demeanor has changed. This started happening like a light switch turning on. We gave him a dog aspirin and it did nothing to help with the pain. What could this be?

This is a CLASSIC example of a herniated disk in his spine! How long has this been going on???? The panting is a sign of extreme pain!!!  You MUST see your Vet tomorrow or you are running the risk of a disk rupture......If the rupture happens, paralysis is next & you have less than 36 hrs. to turn it around with a VERY EXPENSIVE surgery or he will be paralyzed for life or will need to be euthanized!

Until then, he must be crated.....Do not let him even try to do stairs...NO running or jumping...Carry out to potty, then back in.....Cage rest with prescription medications from your Vet will be ordered for 4-6 weeks to stop the herniation.....

This disease is common...You can google:  Intervertabral Disk/Disc Disease and read about it....After he's stable, the very best thing you can do for him is get some weight off......Obese dogs have a higher percentage of back problems.....

Why didn't you ask your sister in the first place, instead of us?
In that case, It's more than likely an Anal gland issue instead of a bowel problem.....When's the last time he had his anal glands expressed? Common problem, especially in overweight dogs.....

I'm glad he's feeling better.....This has nothing to do with worms or parasites......Your correct, Arthrititis does not just switch on.....A herniated disc however, does! .....One minute they're fine & the next minute they're paralyzed! Again, everything you describe IS his Spine....Trust me, I know!

You better be very careful, it WILL be back.......Take care & get some weight off of him.....Less stress on his back & joints.....Good luck, Karla

I hope you don't go to surgery and death that quick with everyone. You could really freak people out.

I knew that was something to look for but I know it has nothing to do with the spine or arthritis yet, if arthritis wouldn't just switch on and he walked fine and didn't like to lay down so not disc bc pain would be greater. I first thought maybe it was worms or parasites the way he moved{take a few steps stop take a few step stop, like it felt good to move but once he stopped it would act up again}. He's fine today after a week I think it was a a sprane or twist and he just needed some down time,. shar pei's have very strong hips, thank you for the option though I really appreciate your comment.

I hope you've taken him to the vet by now. He was yelping in pain and you gave him an aspirin? That's like putting a bandaid on a fresh gunshot wound and expecting it to heal...
