Yorkie neck twitching

Hi, my 4 year old male yorkie has been acting weird today. He yelped when my daughter put her hand on his neck/ shoulder.  So upon further checking, if I gently push I that area it twitches.  In addition he is sitting around just sort of staring at the floor or bed or whatever he's sitting on. Seems sad, very unusual for him. But the spasms I his shoulder seem to react to light touching.  Any suggestions? We are scared there's something wrong with him.

That's good to know. It is tricky, but you might try training his jumping at the door when the mailman comes out of him, particularly as he gets older - otherwise the susceptibility to injuries to his shoulder and neck may become more prevalent. Tony

Thanks everyone! I took him to the vet and she said she thought he had sprained his shoulder, maybe jumping at the front door when the mailman comes. He is much better and acting like his cute self again.

The twitching could be a muscle spasm or worse.  Agree with Tony.  If thus continues, it should be checked out.  In the mean time, I would limit activity and no jumping.

This yelping at a light touch happened to our dog that we had two years ago.  He was 9 years old and it was arthritis.  I took him to the vet at the first opportunity because it made me cry that he was in so much pain.  Your dog is too young for arthritis so it is probably what Tony said.  I hope everything turns out ok for you.

It may be just a pulled neck or shoulder muscle or one of the spinal vertebrae that has been twisted. This is something worthy of being checked out at your vet - and if it were my dog, I would get an X-ray undertaken, just to be safe. Tony
