concerned neighbor

My neighbor's dog is a pitbull boxer mix, she had pups about 8 weeks ago and has been doing fine up until a week ago. I am a big dog lover and I own 8 dogs of my own.  This dog comes to visit me on a daily basis and I let her in when it's cold or too hot.  I care for this dog deeply, but I am recently unemployed and am seeking any type of advice to help this poor animal.  My neighbors are not able to  take her to the vet due to financial issues, so I'm trying to help out as much as I can.  I noticed 2 days ago that she is not as energetic as she normally is and she is not eating normally.  I have been giving her boiled chicken with white rice, which she enjoys but I have noticed that she won't eat the dog food.  I have also been giving her some pedialite in her water to replenish the nutrients she is lacking by not eating or drinking regularly.  She felt very warm so I placed a cold compress on her belly all day today and it lowered the heat I was feeling on her.  She appeared to look a little better since then but I know she is still not her normal active self.  She appears to be tired and all she wants to do is lay down and sleep.  She was shaking this morning, but once her body temperature lowered, the shaking stopped.  She also got up and walked around this afternoon.  But I had to leave so I don't know how she is doing now until I get home tonight.  I am trying to see how I can take her to the vet or ask the neighbor if they will go with me and I will pay for the costs.  It will be financially difficult but I can't ignore her symptoms.

Please advise

I am happy to report that the neighbors dog (Patches) is doing just fine.  She is eating up a storm and drinking plenty of water.  She is my daily visitor once again. She comes and visits me and my Bunch of babies (8 dogs total). She also likes to spend the night. Lol

Thanks for the replies

I'm sorry, I thought I mentioned her age.  I think she is about 2 years old. I'm happy to report that I was able to lower her fever and she iis starting to eat and drink water.  She is thin, but I bought her some dog food with jhigh protein so she can gain some weight.

Bless you, a true friend of animals.

You didn't say (or I can't read) how old the dog is. As she had pups she must not be real old - assume dogs lose that ability somewhere in the middle age range...really don't know.

You are in TX, which is hotter even than NJ I assume.  Here during the hot weather all dogs I associate with just want to sleep inside with the air conditioning.. happily we do have that.  In the absence of cooling the compress you mention may be the best answer, that and stay out of the sun.

Best wishes.
