A week of disorders

Funny that the topic only lets you choose 1 option, because there would be about 3 or 4 that I could choose. I am a 17 year old male and have no health conditions except for a few allergies that bother my nose. During Monday (the day after the superbowl) I noticed that my left eye was producing a slimy green mucus during the day, and excessively. On Tuesday I basically just said I got pink-eye so I drove to the doctor and he prescribed me some eye drops (Toradex). So took those all day, and took them the follow day Wednesday (both days I did not go to school) but on Wednesday night I started getting bold headaches. While I was getting these headaches I felt this sort of electric like shocks go through my body (this has been happening for years, and usually does when I'm lightheaded like I was then) and in spite of this my headaches hurt tremendously by itself. I took ibuprofen to help relieve the pain while I had these headaches. These kept going on Thursday (by this time my eyes were getting better) and that was the only problem I had for Thursday. On Friday my headaches were mostly gone so I attended some of my important academic classes at school but I was starting to pick up a cough. So now on friday night, here I am at home sick as a dog coughing hard, little bit of sneezing, and there was a lot of flem (the gross yellow stuff). For the cough I was taking Benylin to help my sore throat. So on Saturday I wake up and I feel like crap. I got a sore throat, I'm coughing all the time, and I got all this flem inside me. I fight through it during the day and then at night my ear starts to hurt. So I wake up in the middle of the night and my ear is just pounding as the pain had escalated tremendously. I took some more ibuprofen to try and relieve the pain of my ear and I got a hot water bag (IDK what it's supposed to be called) and heated it up and used it like a pillow on my ear. I removed it as it was uncomfortable and I fell asleep fine. Wake up on sunday and my ear is not hurting, but high pitched voices (like my mom and grandma) sound funny and has sort of like an elastic drum ring to it. So I wasn't worrying about it too much but then my mom decided to give me these drops that are for ear and eye (polysporin) and it ended that funny sound to high pitched noises but now my ear really started to ache. It felt like it needed to pop (like when you are going up a mountain) but couldn't and it had enormous pressure (quick note, I still have my sore throat & cough). So for the rest of the day it was just pounding and pounding and now here I am at 2 in the morning, I got school in 6 and a half hours (I'm obviously not going though) and my ear is just pounding and I can't go to sleep. I took some more polysporin because it eased the pain a little bit last time I used it but this time my ear is still throbbing in pain. I have just had the worst week so far from eye infection to drastic headaches to sore throat & cough to ear infection. This sort of thing never happens to me and I am rarely ill even from just the common cold. I'm going to go see a doctor about my ear tomorrow but I just do not know what to do. So I guess I need to put a question in here, that was more of a rant because I've had a ****** week so here it is: I'm starting to question whether my immune system is starting to weaken or whether an infection is spreading to various parts of my body, so which one of these would you think it is or is there another possible reason? Bad luck maybe?

Also something I wanted to mention that was very strange was that right on this phase of my week (sore throat & ear aches) they seem to come and go like a teeter-totter. If my ear is pounding with pain then my throat feels a bit better (physically, it doesn't just feel better because the ear hurts more, I swallow and it is nice and smooth compared to the coarseness and roughness it usually is). When my ear mellows down a bit my throat gets all coarse again and I start coughing a lot. I was just surprised at the physical difference in the feeling of my throat.

Anyways if someone could get back to me about this that would be great because I'm a little bit worried that there is something wrong with my immune system.

It sounds like you may have a sinus infection - it could definitely cause discharge from both your nose and your eyes and because of the "stuff" dripping into your throat, it could also cause the sore throat adn of course any sinus problems can cause a headache.  Sinus infections can also cause ear pain.  Have you been running any fever during this time?

It's a good thing you're going to see the doctor - it sounds like you probably need a round of oral antibiotics.

Best of luck, feel better and let us know what the doctor says!

Hi Robyn

I have had a great weekend so far, slept in both days and it was just awesome with the mattress topper. I am almost fully healed, my ear finally cleared up! Your condition sounds a lot like my dad's he is only able to get out when he is feeling up to it and he also has good friends that phone him. Only problem is due to his disability it is effecting his brain making him slightly mentally challenged so he could talk for hours!

Yes it is very frustrating when our devices do not work but it is our own fault for relying so heavily on them. I couldn't imagine what it would be like without them though!

I hope you had a great weekend as well!

Hey Trevor!

Thank you so much for the information on the mattress topper - I'll definitely check into it.  I have such a horrible time sleeping and my mattress definitely does not help that situation, so the idea of not wanting to get up in the morning because of being too comfy sounds like absolute bliss!!  LOL

I'm glad you got to visit with your dad - I can imagine that he does get lonely during the day.  I, also am on disability due to my multiple health issues, so I can understand somewhat what he must be feeling in that respect.  I am able to get out, though, when I'm feeling up to it, so that definitely helps.  And I have some really good friends that, if they can't physically come over to visit, they at least call to check in with me and talk for a while - which is very nice also.

Your dad is very lucky to have such great sons!

It's also great news that all was fine with your mom and she was just out having some fun.  It's frustrating sometimes when these new fangle technology things don't work like we want them to, but then I sit back and think - hey, what did we do 20 years ago when we didn't even have the option of having these things!!  I know -- before your time!  LOL  I guess that just goes to show you how old I really am!  :)

I hope you have a great weekend and please tell your dad I hope he feels better! (you too)

Hello Robyn

I have figured out about the mattress topper, it is called NovaForm Gel mattress topper.

I am doing fine, just the same cough with phlegm once in awhile so I am definitely getting better, plus I think my ear is starting to clear up too. Also my mom went out with a friend after but her cell phone battery life died so she couldn't call.

Visited my dad today and he really enjoys it when me and my brother visit him. He does not work because of his disability so he gets lonely during the day.

Hope the mattress topper will help you sleep because it sure did for me and my parents. Only one bad thing about it though, in the morning I do not want to get up because I am so comfy!

Have a great night :)

PLEASE don't even worry about the mattress topper - that's the last thing I'm concerned about!

I'm hoping beyond hope that your mom got home safely shortly after you posted and that everything is fine.  Please let me know how things turned out.

So glad to hear that both you and your dad are feeling better.

Keep me posted,

Hello Robyn, I am doing good and my dad is too, I would say I'm about 90% right now. Although I am doing good, I am worried sick about my mother! It is 9pm and usually she is home by now she got off work at around 5 and had a hair appointment after but that doesn't take 4 hours so I have no idea whats going on.

I will get back to you on the bed, I will figure it out later sorry I am just a bit worried right now even though it will all be fine it the end, it always is.

Have a good night,
Trevor

GREAT news on both you feeling better and your dad being out of the hospital!!  I'm so glad you're both doing better :)

Best of luck catching up on your schoolwork - I'm sure it all seems overhwhelming right now with so much of it to do, but Im sure you'll do fine.

Hoping the next time you post, both you and your dad will be back 100% feeling wonderfully!

I am doing fine, floor hockey again today but I took it easy. My dad is out of the hospital as well. I still have a slight cough but there is barely any mucus when I blow my nose, I would say I am going to be 100% by Thursday. Now that I am healed I need to focus on my school work as I am behind due to only being there 3 times in the last 3 weeks!

I still need to find out that foam thing I will do that tonight and next time I post I should have it for you.

Hi Trevor!

So glad to hear that you had a good day and both you and your dad seem to be feeling at least somewhat better.

Try to take it as easy as possible - don't overexert yourself if possible (even in floor hockey!) - your body will take some time to fully recover and for you to build all your strength back up again.  You may still have a few days where you feel better than others, but you definitely seem to be on the road to recovery now, so I'm very happy about that.

Please keep me posted on how both you and your dad are doing and do not hesitate to let me know if there's anything else I might be able to help with.

Hello Robyn, I have had a good day, aside from low energy at one point of the day because I tried too hard in P.E. (We were playing floor hockey which is my absolute favourite!) but other than that it was good. Mild coughing and mucus as before but it is getting even milder. I visited my dad again today and he got moved out of the emergency section of the hospital (because they were so crammed) and now he actually has a room and a TV. So he is doing a lot better now and they are still running tests on him. Thank you for your support through this whole ordeal and if I do need somebody to talk to I would feel very comfortable doing so with you.

Thanks for letting me know about the flu, I feel as if I should know more about this knowing I took Biology 11 and 12 but we all tend to forget most of the things we learn in our courses am I not correct!

Mattress topper still no answer, asked my mom again today and she just said she needs to get the box out of the closet but I will just go do it myself after school tomorrow it is the least I can do for you for all of your support.

So I had a good day and school and I am continuing to feel better, I cannot believe the day is finally here! I will keep you posted and will get back to you about the mattress.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad and hope that whatever news your mom has for you is not as bad as you fear.  Even at my age, I can't even imagine losing a parent, so I definitely cannot fathom what you must be going through knowing that your dad might not be with you for a long time to come.  If you ever want/need to talk about any of that also, please feel free - I certainly won't be able to give you an personal experience about it because (fortunately), I've never been through it, but I'd be more than happy to lend an "ear" if you needed to talk to someone and don't feel like you can talk to your mom or grandma.

It sounds like you're feeling a bit better - I'm glad.  Yes, you are right - influenza IS a virus, however, there are so many different strains of influenza and other viruses that it's virtually impossible for us to basically become immune to them all.  That's why there's no vaccine for things such as the common cold.  I know there is a vaccine for the flu, but even with teh flu, there are many different strains of it, so even if you get the flu shot, you could still become sick with a different strain than what was covered with the vaccine.  Partly you are correct - our immune system does FIGHT against the virus/illness, but an actual immunity is not created - that's why you can get the flu EVERY year or even several times a year.  Unlike many of the diseases that we either (typically) only get once (such as chickenpox or measles), our bodies don't ever fully become immune against viruses.

Also, even if you start out with a virus, it's still quite possible for it to go into a bacterial infection - and I THINK that might be what's been going on with you.  You probably DID start off with having the flu (influenza), but then developed a sinus infection which may or may not have also infected your ear (a sinus infection itself can cause ear pain, etc.)  Even if you did not develop a secondary infection (which is an infection that develops after an initial illness), people's bodies differ, so it could just simply take your body longer to fight off the virus than it might someone else's body.  Another thing to keep in mind is that when we are under stress - as you obviously have been with your dad's health problems - it can make our immune systems extra sensitive and make it harder for our bodies to heal from anything - so even if you haven't developed a secondary infection, just the stress that you've been experiencing could be one reason why it's taking longer for you to get over the initial virus.

No rush on the info on the mattress topper - just whenever you and your mom have a chance.  I have such a horrible time sleeping and I know my mattress is partly to blame, I'm always searching for possible helpful things.

I hope you have a great day at school and continue to feel better.  Keep me posted!

So now I'm home right now and got some time, my dad is doing fine except there will be some news for me I'm nervous about. My mom was on the phone with my dads best friend talking about him when we got home from the hospital and I asked her what it was and she said we will talk later. So I have no idea what it is, I already know he is only supposed to live another 5 years (I overheard my grandma talking with him one time) so I am trying to mentally prepare myself hoping that it is nothing worse. He is in the hospital again tonight so I will go visit him tomorrow again.

Now about me, today again was very mild with my flu symptoms. Just a cough a few times, and some mucus and phlegm. I'm going to school tomorrow so I am just praying that they do not repress again and I'm still puzzled as to why they did it anyways. Influenza is a virus right? So I thought the immune system creates an immunity against it which is how it gets healed. I don't know why it got worse usually thats a bacterial thing right? Maybe I am completely wrong but it doesn't matter we will just see how I'm feeling after school tomorrow.

Also I never forgot about the bed thing I asked my mom and she couldn't remember she needed to get the box but she was busy at the moment. Now she is watching the Oscars so I will not bother her but I will get back to you tomorrow, I remember it costed about $150 Canadian so it should be similar seeing how our dollars are almost equal right now.

I will keep you posted, goodnight.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad - I hope he's feeling better and will be able to come home soon.

You're probably right about today's episode - lack of "real" food.  I know you mentioned you had started munching on a bag of skittles.  Have you ever been tested for diabetes or insulin resistance?   I only ask that because if you have trouble with your blood sugar and eat a good bit of something sugary without anything else on your stomach, that sugar is going to hit your blood stream really, really fast and cause your blood sugar to rise.  Then it will cause it to plummet, which could definitely cause dizziness, nausea and a feeling like you're going to faint.

Had you taken any meds before leaving the house?  Some meds can make you feel that way too - especially if taken on an empty stomach.

I'm glad that you feel like you're beginning to get better - here's hoping that feeling continues and you don't HAVE to go to the doctor.  Hopefully, too, that new mattress will help you get the extra rest we all need when we're not feeling well.

By the way - what kind of mattress thing was it they got you?  I REALLY need something new for my mattress and I'm not sure what is best to buy - I've looked into several ones, but can't quite decide.  Getting advice from someone who has found something that is really comfy would be great!

Get another great night of sleep, see how you feel tomorrow and then hopefully you can make the decision as to whether you need to get in to see a doctor.  I'm like you - I'd rather not go see one if I don't have to, so I can completely understand that.

Keep me posted on how you're feeling and let me know, if you can, what kind of mattress topper your parents got you.  Thanks!

On friday I was feeling better and my mom said that I shouldn't go see the doc and just give it another days rest. My parents got me this foam thing for my bed and it was so comfortable I had the best sleep and I was in the same position when I woke up as I was when I fell asleep (probably a first). So I had a great sleep, slept in until 2pm. My mom wanted to watch a movie with me and my younger brother so I get all set up on the couch downstairs, start munchin on a bag of skittles, then my mom says we need to go. My dad had been in the hospital all night because of a minor stroke from his Mitochondrial Disease so we had to go see him. So we were there and were visiting him, but about an hour into the visit I started feeling really lightheaded, dizzy, exhausted, and sweaty. I felt this for about 15 minutes but didn't say anything because there were a couple of my dads friends there. It got really bad to a point where I felt like I was going to pass out so I just walked right over to my mom and said "I feel like I'm going to pass out we need to leave". She told me to take a seat so I sat down on my dads bed and grabbed the garbage can and almost puked. So I got out of there and we went home, the obvious problem was I did not get enough to eat but I had no time to have anything else because we were in a rush to get over there. Now I am at home at about 5, just had a sandwich and I'm going to go rest on my comfy bed.

My flu symptoms are really starting to go away, I'm not sure if it is because I am being healed or because that episode I just had literally scared the **** out of me. I will keep you posted, I'm not sure if I will go see a doctor now unless my symptoms do get worse again. I would try to get an ENT doctor as you mentioned because there I get the evaluation I would need. Again sorry I have no doctor response for you but I will keep you posted.

Hopefully you'll be able to get in to see the doctor and get an answer to what's going on.  I'm sure by this point you're completely tired (no pun intended) of being sick!

As far as your ear goes, it really depends on what is causing the diminished hearing as to how long before it clears up.  If it's just a matter of excess wax (yes, that can sometimes cause an earache), then it should clear up as soon as that wax is removed (can be done by the doc in his/her office).

If it's due to an infection either in your ear itself or in your sinuses, then once the infection is under control, then your hearing should return to normal.

If it's due to inflammation - again either in the ear itself or in the sinuses, then again, once that is under control, the hearing should return.

If you're unable to get in to see a doctor, don't feel like you're getting any results from your doctor, or if he/she gives you some treatments that don't work, you may want to consider being seen by an ENT (ear, nose and throat) doctor.  Because their specialty is the ear, nose and throat, they very well may have better knowledge and ideas as to what is the cause and better ideas of what to do.  You may need a referral from your doctor to be seen by one though, so your first step still should be seeing a family physiciian (even if it's not your normal regular doc).

Looking forward to hearing how your doc visit goes and what they've found/decided to do.  I hope you feel better!

Wasn't able to get him as I would have had to book an appointment in advance. My mom doesn't work tomorrow so we will drop in and just see another random probably. I will try what you said about propping my upper body up. The mucus progressively died down during the day and by about 4pm the mucus rarely had colour in it. I have been drinking a lot of water especially when I was having problems will all that excessive mucus, later on I had to urinate every 15 minutes though!

Sorry I cannot give you an answer from a doctor because I know you would love one (and I would too) but it didn't work out today. I will keep in touch tomorrow and tell you how I feel / what symptoms I am having.

Also a side note do you know anything about ears? I have no idea when my ear will clear up and I will be able to start hearing out of it properly again.

I'm glad you're going to be going to the doctor - and especially that you'll be going to your own doctor.  As you said, he knows you better than a random doc would.

It is possible that the excessive mucous you had earlier was because of sleeping last night.  Any time you have congestion, whether it be chest congestioni or nasal congestion, it can definitely feel worse after laying down for a period of time (sometimes within just minutes)  One way to help reduce this would be to use extra pillows in bed - kind of propping your upper body up instead of just your head.  A better way would be to elevate the head of your bed - you can purchase bed risers at places such as Walmart for a very reasonable amount of money - they usually come in a set of four, but you would just use two to elevate the head of your bed only.  I say this is a better way to do it because when you use extra pillows in bed, as we sleep and move around, they tend to also move and you could end up without the benefit of the extra pillows.  Also, sometimes, using just extra pillows to elevate your upper body in bed can put some pressure on your diaghram due to the positioning of your body, which could result in more coughing or dificulty with breathing.

I also suggest making sure tha tyou're staying well hydrated - this will help to keep that mucous as thin as possible, making it easier to clear out of your nose, throat and lungs.  Sometimes taking a nice hot steamy shower can help loosen it too.

Let me know what the doc says.

I did not get to see the doctor that day. I started feeling better that night anyways so I thought if I start feeling better I would assume (crazy enough) that I would actually be getting better. So I yesterday wasn't too bad, only thing wrong really was the mucus and runny nose. Now today, I have only been awake for about half an hour but the mucus is very excessive to what it was yesterday. Is this because I was asleep all night and I am just clearing away the buildup or is it just harsher than it was before. Regardless I am for sure going to the doctor this time, I will admit I am one of those type of people who likes to resist or deny help when they need it but I will not hold back this time. Also this time I will go see my family doctor instead of getting a random one, he knows me better and will assess me properly I hope.

Thanks for your concern, I will keep you updated.

How are you feeling today?  Were you able to get a better night's sleep?

Were you able to make an appointment with your doctor?  And if so, what did he/she say?

I'm concerned about you, so please keep me posted on how you're doing.

There's no need to thank me for anything - I'm glad I could be of some assistance.

Mono quite often does include a severe sore throat in its symptoms, however, just because your throat may not be severely sore, that doesn't necessarily mean you don't have it.  Just as it can cause a high fever in some people, it doesn't HAVE to cause a high fever in everyone.  I'm glad that you're going to ask your doctor to check for it.

Yellow mucous (or green, etc.) typically does mean some sort of infection - the blood could also be a result of an infection or just simply irritation from your nose being inflamed and blowing it.  Again, a good thing to have it checked out - as I said in my first comment, a sinus infection definitely could account for all of your symptoms.

Let me know what you find out from the doctor and I hope you feel better soon - it certainly is no fun being sick!

Again I thank you for your response. I had absolutely the worst dream last night because when I woke up in the middle of the night (a few times) it was hard for me to believe reality and I felt as if my life was that dream. It just screwed with my mind badly and I tried to snap out of it but I couldn't. So I did not get a very good sleep, and now that I am awake I am still tired, I have a headache, I still cannot hear out of my left ear very well, and my throat is still sore. Mono was something I was worried about but my friends have had it before and apparently your throat gets extremely swollen and sore and I do not think mine has gotten to that degree. I will go to the doctor and ask for a blood test to check for it anyways. I will give you a list of what medications I have taken during these 2 weeks I have been sick.

Dimetapp
Benylin
Ibuprofen
Polysporin drops (for eye & ear)
Tobradex (for eye)
Avamys Nasal Spray

Now I am blowing my nose and aside from the extremely yellow mucus there is blood in it as well. So I will go to the doctor and get it figured out I cannot stress how much I appreciate you taking time to help me, thank you.

I'm sorry that you're still not feeling well.

I do think you should go back to the doctor and get checked again.  It could be that you do just have an extreme case of the flu and it's going to take time to fully recover, however, since some of your symptoms seem to be getting worse or at the very least, ease up for a short time and then come back full force, I feel it would be best to check in with the doc again.

One thing I would ask them to check you for would be mono (it's a simple blood test) - unfortunately, your age group tends to be the age that are more prone to it, however, you can get it at any age.  It quite often shows up after a bout with a virus or infection and your extreme tiredness is definitely one of the symptoms (as is a sore throat).  When I had mono many, many, many years ago (too many for me to want to admit because that would show my age!), I ran an extremely high fever (105.6 when I got to the hospital and went up to 106.3 while I was there), but you can also have mono without a high fever.  I'm guessing you had at least a bit of a fever over the weekend based on you saying you had the chills.

I would defnitely make sure that the doc looks in both your ear and throat and perhaps ask them to do a strep test just to be sure.

The lightheadedness could be because of your ear (fluid or infection or even just inflammation in the ear can cause dizziness), but it's definitely a good idea to have that checked out.  PLEASE, if you are lightheaded or dizzy, do not drive yourself to the doctor - as your mom or a friend to drive you.

Are you taking, or have you tried, any other over the counter meds other than the ibuprofen you took when you first got sick?  If not, check with your doctor to see if it's ok for you to try something like either a decongestant or even an antihistamine to see if they help with the congestion and sore throat.

I hope you get to feeling better real soon - please keep me posted on how you're doing.

So it has been two weeks since I was diagnosed with the flu but I am still feeling symptoms. As we all know the flu usually cures itself in 7-10 days but it has been 14 now and I still feel terrible. During the week I went to school on Thursday and Friday, still mildly ill but I was falling behind in my courses so I needed to go. I would just have a cough once in awhile but no phlegm or anything like that. I still cannot hear properly out of my left ear but now when I blow my nose I can hear like a popping and crackling noise and it's very loud and painful. On Friday night I went to my friends house but opted not to drink with them as I was still trying to fully recover. I didn't feel bad at all that night or during Saturday. Although I woke up Sunday morning and my throat was sore (it was a different pain this time, rather than coarse and dry it felt inflamed). I felt perfectly fine during the day (except for throat and ear that were not bothering me) and I went to my friends house that night and started feeling really tired around 11:00. I slept at his house and in the morning even thought I got about 10 hours of sleep I was still extremely tired. I drove home, took a nap, then had to go out for Chinese Dinner with the family when I woke up from my nap. I didn't each much and was tired, cold, cough, and had a runny nose while we were there (need to note that I still have the throat pain and bad ear). Went home and I was feeling very lightheaded so I took another nap for an hour, woke up, then went to bed. So I started to think about how long my symptoms have been going on while I was lying awake so I once again jumped on here at around 11:20pm. Forgot to mention there was no school for me today (Monday) or tomorrow. So here I am with my sore throat, cough, lightheadedness, bad ear, chills, and now my body is starting to ache (slightly though almost not noteworthy). After typing this all out I realize how stupid it was for me to leave the house this weekend but it is what it is so now I need to figure out if I have a bigger problem or whether me being an idiot is the reason I am still ill.

My motive for coming on here is the fact that I would gain symptoms when I felt like I was fine and my energy levels were not effected. What puzzles me is how my throat got sore out of nowhere when I woke up on Sunday morning, when my only symptom I was experiencing was the ear (which I was told will just clear up when it is healed). Also at my friends house I started to become extremely tired even after sleep as well when my energy level was not previously effected. Only reason I thought I was good enough to go out was because my energy level was normal and my cough had gone away for the most part.

So again I am worrying if my immune system is not up to par? Or if the doctor I saw last Tuesday did not properly examine me (which is common at this time of year as they are very busy) or I have an even worse condition (possibly Pneumonia?). So do I need to go for round 3 with the doctor or is it my own fault that I am still sick?

Thanks in advance.
