Hyoid Bone Syndrome

My son has had neck/throat pain since he had severe vomiting -5 months ago. He complains of pain over his pharynx? He also complains about his tonguefeeling yucky and funny. Something flipping in his throat and a pop. His teeth hurt and he has pain on the top of his sternum and or frontal collarbone. When whatever it is pops all his pain goes away. He has been to see an endocrinologist for his thyroid, had an Upper GI and had a laryngascopy done. all were normal. His ENT says that you can NOT have anything wrong with your hyoid bone unless you break it. He wants him to have a barium swallow next. My son also complains that his tiongue gets stuck and at other times is falling out. Anyone have suggestions on who to see since modern medicine refuses to beleive it could be his hyoid bone?
Thank you

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.

Understand your predicament. Like your doctor pointed out, his symptoms may not be due to hyoid bone syndrome. As with this there should be a history of injury, but most important of all there should be pain on palpating the front portion of the neck. And this can sometimes induce radiation of pain. In the absence of which a diagnosis of hyoid bone syndrome can be ruled out.

His symptoms could sometimes be due to pharyngeal pouch, referred to as a Zenkers diverticulum. This can cause regurgitation of food and the altered sensation on the tongue. It can also cause chest discomfort. This is detected by a barium swallow. Hence your doctor has suggested a barium swallow.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
