Hearing nothing

hi there,

I am just a bit curious. Is it possible to hear absolute silence?

It's just that I noticed that when I think about this or concentrate on it I can hear like a high pitched sound.  When I don't think about it or when I am out and about I don't hear it. Sometimes I think I might somehow mentally induce it.

I never really thought of this before the last few weeks, then I started to notice it one day when I woke up.

I have read that no one truly hears silence but I don't know.

If anyone would like to share their experiences and/or knowledge I would be grateful.

Thanks

Sounds like you have tinnitus. If you have a loud ringing sound or humming sound in one or both ears, you have tinnitus. If you don't focus or pay attention, you barely notice it Tinnitus is a symptom. Doctors can't really figure this out. I would see your doctor and get referred to an ENT if this bothers you. They can give you an MRI scan to rule things out or nasal spray or something to relieve your symptoms but sometimes they don't help. People suffer from tinnitus for months and years. It can go away. Losing weight can give you tinnitus but that is rare. Talk to your doctor and go from there. Good luck

Just to add.. It seems to coincide with my losing weight recently. I have lost around 20pounds in a couple of months due to dieting and exercising. That's about 10% of my body weight.

Can it go away or just get better? It's just that when I don't pay attention I can't hear it. It's only when I become aware of it, that it's noticeable.... If you know what I mean.

I don't have any hearing loss either.

I remember about 5 years ago I would get hissing on and off in my left ear for about 6 months then it just went away.
