i am a professional trumpet player. i just received a perforated eardrum courtesy of a nerf ball strike in the ear at a kiddie amusement park. go figure. one in a billion, right?
how dangerous is playing trumpet while healing? i don't have any pain while playing, but there is a wierd buzzing that accompanies any noise. do i put myself at great risk? tough decision for me. i need to play the bills.

I generally advise people with perforated ear drums to avoid activities such as playing instruments like trumpets, etc., that may result in air being forced up the eustachian tube. Working out is probably OK, just use good judgment.
Thank you so much for your input ENTMD!
I just have one more question.
Is it safe for me to work out at the gym and have constant airflow out of my ear? Or is that adding too much tension to my eardrum and potentially making it worse?
This is true, ear drums can heal again and again -- just like your skin anywhere else. Sometimes larger perforations don't heal and a simple procedure can be done to fix this. This isn't recommended until the drum is given enough time to try it on its own. You are doing the right thing. Follow-up with your ENT doc!
