My daughter had similar probs until she was 4. She was a terrible sleeper - waking many many times at night and snoring like a trooper. Her tonsils had always been huge though never infected. After badgering the GP several times for a referral to ENT, she was seen in Outpatients and the Consultant agreed to remove her tonsils. As well as the night waking, she laboured for breath most nights as her tonsils were so large they were obstructing her airway. She was propped up on 4 pillows a night - which, at her age was nuts! After she recovered from th op, she was fine - and she's 6 and a half now. Sleeps through the night, no snoring, no breathing problems. Job done.
Don't be afraid to pester your GP for a referral to someone who knows what they are talking about. They are called specialists for a good reason after all.
Good luck with your son.
My baby, well he will be 16 this year, had the same problem as a child.
I would guess your child may need his adenoids and/or his palatine tonsils removed. I hope you are taking him to an ENT specialist. Not sure if this is something heredity, but I have had problems on and off with my palatine tonsils throughout the years; still have them though.
Keep us posted on the outcome.
The best of luck.
