Tips for starting to eat again for those who are recovering

This is not a question, just a few tips for those who are on the road to recovering from an eating disorder. Just a little background on me: I suffered from Anorexia for six years of my life and have been recovered for twelve years now. For me, I experienced some gas and bloating. This can be quite stressful as it makes one feel full and gaining weight. I found that mixing some natural ginger in a tea or water helped. Also, digestion was a little slow for me. To help that along, I used papaya and pineapple. They both contain digestive enzymes called papain and bromelain respectively. This helps particularly to digest proteins and I still use it after a meal sometimes. It may also take a bit of time to become regular so dates, prunes and raisins helped me to kick start that again as well. Just thought I would post this for those who may be struggling with getting back on a good eating pattern again. I'm not a dietitian or medical professional. So always refer to one first. These are just some tips I used to help me in my recovery. Always here for support. Remember, recovery is possible!

I'm in the same sort of boat as you!  I have recovered from both Anorexia and Bulimia and like yourself I struggle with bloating, and find myself often mistaking the bloating as weight gain.  Wow!  We are two positive people for this site.
Yes everybody.  YOU CAN RECOVER FROM AN EATING DISORDER.  I had Anorexia aged 16-18, and Bulimia age 18-32.  I am now 38 and the idea of being sick is yuck!  The thought of overdosing on laxatives is something I wouldn't dream off now.
The main thing that helped me to recover was to have an tested understanding that  one binge will not make you fat.  This belief will help you break the cycle of ridding the food which leaves you feeling empty and wanting to binge again.
Another thing that helped me was. -If I had to binge, I binged on muesli which is high in carbs, however consider RABBIT FOOD by most.  There is no point of purging such food out.
Thank you for your help ExPat2013.  I hope others will read this post too! :-) Beanie0

Hi Beanie0, thank-you so much for reading my post, sharing your story, providing added tips and congrats on your recovery! You are absolutely right! It helps to eat healthy food that you wouldn't want to purge. I learned to plan on eating healthy foods that I knew there would be no point in purging. This is a healthy step towards stopping the vicious cycle. I also hear ya on the thought of getting sick. Yuck! Yes! Recovery is possible. You and I know that when you are sick and suffering, there seems that there is no light at the end of the tunnel and that we're doomed forever. Not true! You and I are living proof that recovery is possible! Thank-you for sharing and helping me spread the word of hope to others:)

Got a question for you BXByy.  Have you had any trauma in your life?  Any assault? Any abuse?  Sometimes people do put on weight without even thinking of it as almost like a psychological shield. I think it is terrific to not get caught in the skinny trap where you feel you have to be one way but just want to check on that as it really does happen.
