Just starting Depo Lupron...nervous!

I'm just starting the Lupron shot tomorrow, and I'm quite nervous.  Any helpful tips for a first-timer?  I just had surgery to remove a baseball-size cyst along with an ovary, and clean up several adhesions and scar tissue. My doc says I need to have this shot or else I'm looking at a hysterectomy...I'm 31!
Thanks.

Hi there.  I had for several years a cyst and in December '07, they did an ultrasound and they suspected it might be cancer.  My PF said the only option was to remove everything and that meant me entering into an early menopause.  I was shocked by it and it implied that I could not have any kids.

So, I started searching on line and talking to doctors and I found a doctor who was also worried about my fertility.  He said the only option was to do a laparotomy (bikini line surgery) so in Dec '08, I had surgery.  The doctor found a 6 cm endometrioma or chocolate cyst, and was able to drain it and preserve it along with its tube.  I also had adhesions and he did washings, and I was given the 3-month Lupron shot.

I had some side effects like hot flashes, a little tiredness and a little headache around 6 pm, and had some insomnia, but in general I felt well.  They have ran two ultrasounds and I have been checked by the GYN and there is no sign of endometrioma or endometriosis, and I have been given an hormone treatment to regulate my periods, and I am trying to get pregnant now.

For me, the combination of the two things is what actually helped me recover.  Remember, everyone is different, but you have to find a doctor whom you can trust, has experience and whom you feel comfortable with.

I am glad I did it and I know it can be scary, but talk to your doctor and make the decision.  The only option to help control the endometriosis is by surgery and Lupron.

I hope this info helps you out and if you have any doubts, don't hesitate to ask.

Best wishes,

Neta

Hi  I did a 6 month round of lupron back in 2004-2005, and besides the hotflashes and gaining 10lbs in the first month, no pain and no AF during the treatmeant, nothing else. after the treatment was done the pain came back but it wasn't as awful ...after  a year the pain kept getting worse and in 2009 I did have surgery and did another 6 months of lupron and the side effects were the same, the only difference is that this time, I actually had NO pain at all with my first AF after treatmeant, this was like a mircale for me, I guess the sugery/lupron combo was a good one for me.

If I had to this again, I probably would, the main reason - I have no children and a hysterectomy is not an option for me.

talk to your doctor about all you worries, and also there is a medicine you can take while on lupron to minimize the side effects, I can't remember the name, I decided not to use it.

another natural approach is doing accupunture for endo, maybe you can consider it. this is the plan I will try next.

I hope you are able to gather all the info you need to make the right decision as to what you should do.

From what I know about Lupron it has a lot of really bad side affects and is pretty miserable to be on. I wont know until after my surgery, but I think I'll just get a hysterectomy when I turn 28 instead of going on Lupron. Of course the decision is yours, but my doctor won't even let people use Lupron because of the side affects.
