Could it be EBV?

I've been pretty sick for about a month now. The first "episode" seemed like a really bad cold with severe fatigue, and the doctor said that it was most likely a cold virus and gave me a nasal steroid spray and instructed me to take mucinex since sudafed wasn't working to drain my ears and sinuses. I slept a ton but I didn't really feel much better. A week later I felt even worse. I was have 102.6 fevers, chills, severe ear pain, green bloody nasal mucus, and horribly swollen, pus covered tonsils and severe fatigue. I literally slept for almost 5 days straight. She prescribed zpak for my tonsils (assumed over the phone to be strep) and after about 4 days the pus decreased and after a week the pus and swelling were pretty much gone. I was feeling a little bit better. A week after that I am feeling sick again. Severe ear pain, severe fatigue, headaches, sore throat. I went to the doctor and it's another middle ear infection. She prescribed amoxicillan and it's been 4 and a half days and I don't feel better yet. I have to take at least one 3 hour nap a day, I can't get through even an easy work out and I am pretty miserable.

What made me think of EBV was how insanely tired I have been for the entire past month... Does this sound like EBV? If I still feel like this in two days (Monday) I am going back to the doctor regardless, but I just wondered if I should be considering this

Well, to me the symptoms were bacterial for the ear infection that had green pus. That is a sign of bacteria not virus. The sinus was draining as well. Don't know if you had a virus on top of it or not. I can tell you bacteria can really take you down. I have had a bad strep throat (not the usual strep A) another type (G). And I was so sick I barely made it to the doctor for antibiotics. My fever was about 103 and I was very sick and wiped out. So, as a microbiologist when I saw your symptoms I thought you had a bacteria not mono. But, the second doctor, I can see why they might think that (sore throat , swollen lymph nodes). But they were just checking. I didn't want to argue with a doctors diagnosis. The pus is a big sign of bacteria not virus. So, I hope that you are getting over it. If not you may need another antibiotic.

Well, lab results came back totally clean. I am shocked. Apparently I must have in all seriousness just had four seperate viruses and infections literally back to back or feeding off of eachother. Crazy. I have never in my life been so sick or experienced such consistent fatigue! So surprised.

No the mouth ulcer isn't related unless it is from a high fever. Sometimes fevers can cause that but it might be from the other infection. I think you had two things going on. I'm interested to hear if you really have mono plus the ear infection. Not everyone gets a swollen spleen from mono but it can swell. If you see the doctor again and still have the mouth ulcer I would point it out. It probably will heal on its own. Is that ***** too? or just sore?  I think you are still recovering from the other infection too.

Yeah what is interesting is that the antibiotic did fix my ears the redness and pus is gone she said, but I still just feel unwell and exhausted. She felt around my lymph nodes which were very tender. She didn't feel for a swollen spleen. She checked my mouth and was asking me if swallowing was still painful. I have a gigantic ulcer in the back corner of my mouth (close to where my top wisdom tooth used to be) is that related? Or just random? I took out a flash light last night because I wanted to see it and I noticed these little red dots on the roof of my mouth and towards the back and a couple along the sides of my mouth. They are really tiny and not raised, just like bright red little dots almost like little broken blood vessels? Idk...

Well, maybe you got mono with a ear infection? That would be different but probably possible. They will be able to tell from a mono spot (might be too late for that) and a immunoglobulin M IGM serology. The IgG wouldn't tell you anything because everyone has that. But a combination of things should give them an idea of whether you had it or not. You can get a swollen spleen too so don't be too active. If the doctor felt you had a swollen spleen that will indicate mono. Plus your complete blood count would have atypical lymphocytes. Did you have swollen lymph nodes under your neck and /or arm pits? Usually, you feel better within 2-6 weeks. So we'll see. Let me know ok?

Thank you for your response. I went to the doctor this morning. A different one than the other couple times since I am at school. She seemed to think that there was a pretty strong chance of mono because of the timeline (the antibiotic didn't start to clear up the unconfirmed "strep" for about a week, length of time I've been sick, severe fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, etc.). She seemed to think that the ear problem is indirectly related. Who knows. But she drew blood to test for mono so I guess we will see... I just want to know what is and to feel better. I get sick a lot, but I have just never in my entire life experienced such fatigue with illness!

No it doesn't sound like EBV at all. It sounds like an ear infection with either a strep throat in addition to the Ear infection and possibly sinus. EBV doesn't present symptoms like this.  I think you don't feel well either because the antibiotic hasn't had time to work or the bacteria is resistant to it. I would call your doctor or try to get in sooner.  Take it easy right now and don't try to be working out. You need your energy and to rest. You will get your self back in shape when you are better. I think the steroid ran your immune system down because it wasn't a virus and then it got worse. Or it started as a virus then you got a secondary infection. You need to get that fever down. Get to the doctor so they can really see what is going on. It is hard to diagnose over the phone.
