Mono and Prednisone

Hi, I was just put on prednisone for my extreme mono I have had for 5 months- I''m taking 16mg 3 times per day for 3 days then 2 times per day for 3 days, then I'm taking 10mg two times per day for two days then one time per day for two days. Will I have moon face or other side effects when taking this drug short term? I am nervous, I started tonight. I just want to feel better and like myself again. I am studying abroad currently and I have been missing various activities and travel opportunities due to my constant fatigue, swollen glands, eyes, face, and ear ache- I have been dealing with this for so long, I hope this helps but I don't think the side effects are worth it if they occur.

Hi Emmy,
I did have mono 3 months ago, starting in early Nov last year.
I had the classic symptoms: fever, night sweats, headaches, swollen glands, weight loss (around 4 kg)...had the sore throat/tonsilitis with white patches but that only lasted 5 dayts or so.  I also had swollen eyelids like you for about 2 weeks, it looked really scary. It must suck to have have had them for so long.
My bloodwork during acute infection indicated several abnormalities which are typical of mono- elevated lymphocytes, slightly low neutrophils (although still in the normal range), elevated liver transamines. These have all pretty much returned to normal now, as I had tests repeated 2 weeks ago.
However, upto now I have some lingering symptoms; I am not sure if they are the after effects of the mono or something else:
1. Fatigue
2. Dry mouth / white coated tongue
3. Dry flaky skin on face/scalp
Are these all post-viral symptoms after mono, or did I pick up another virus ? Am struggling to make sense of it.

Hi WontonJoe,

My ears hurt constantly , especially when I swallow or am in the cold or walk around for too long. Every morning I wake up with very swollen eyes and cheeks. Sometimes my eyes are hard to open in the morning because of the swelling. In October I was diagnosed with chronic ortitis then with tonsillitis I was give two doses of antibiotics from the Italian doctors here but their medical system here is very different from America and the treatment was not very successful. I was then given 7 other medications and other pain relievers but nothing helped. Then finally they tested me for mono, which I was positive with. I have been resting and missing all my travel opportunities, it has been hard. Since I haven't been getting better  I was given the prednisone. My first full day taking it was today. I felt my heart racing all day, had no appetite, and my head has hurt. I have been tired yet I cannot sleep.. I don't know what to do or who to go to because the doctors here have not helped much. I just want energy back again so I can exercise and travel! Do you have mono? Were your symptoms similar to mine? Thanks for the reply.

Hi Emmy,

Sorry to hear about your situation. Sounds like mono has hit you at a bad time.

What kind of symptoms has mono caused with your eyes / face / ears?
