Extreme Shin Splints

Ok so I have had shin pain for the last 6 years. I went to four doctors and to physical therapy twice. I have had X- rays, bone scans, and MRI's done and no one can figure it out. The last doc said he could not figure out what was wrong until he opened me up or try drilling holes in my shin. But I wasn't about to let that happen until I was confident there wsa absolutely nothing else I could do so I can start running again. It's a throbbing pain in the inner part of my left leg (shin) right above where my calve starts ( I have high calves). It feels like it is right under the actual shin bone itself near the edge of the bone. I have done incredible amounts of ice, rest ( I don't) run anymore, elevation, air cast, electode therapy, massage, orthotics, chiropractor, enormous amounts of pain relievers, bike, elliptical, water running, every kind of stretching available for hours at a time, and nothing has worked.
I can still walk around fine but it's just nagging me all the time. It all started the 6 months after I ran a marathon. I was on the relay team and all I had built up to was 13 miles. We had lost 2 guys the day before the race so I volunteered to run the whole thing and just gut it out. STUPID I know. The race was mostly hills also so going down hill while I was tired was alot of over stretching I know. Well when I started to run again I figured I could start with the mileage I always did in the past. When the pain started I kept pushing through as I did before but it never went away. 6 years later I am still not healed. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

I suffered from the same thing.  Until i found these magnetic insoles.  I know it sounds a little strange.  My mom herniated two disks in her back in febuary.  She went to a chiropractor and physical therapist every week for 3 months, but nothing would help the pain.  They started talking about surgery and shots but she refused.  Our aunt talked to her about a company that had magnets that she was getting a lot of relief from.  My mom started using the technologies and with in 3 months was pain free.  So I started doing reseach and found that they had insoles for your shoes that would help with a lot of different things.  I got them and with in a week I noticed a difference. Now, I don't even get shin splints. I also had to make sure I got my 6-8 cups of water in as well.  The magnets work alot better when you are hydrated.  It worked for me, that doens't mean you would get the same result, but I was willing to try anything.  Let me know if you want some more info on the company.    ***@****

Sorry, I probably should have mentioned, that mine were definetly not as severe as yours.  I have just battled them since high school(I was the trach captain).  Every time I run, I don't know if it is the way I run or what but I have big shin muscles.  I would run on the grass, stretch before and after, creams, and even ice like you said. I would get some relief and then the pain would come back. I just got used to it.
Mine bugged me, but never to the point of going to the doctor.  I don't know it sounds like you have tried the doctor rout and they can't help, so maybe its worth a try.
