Orphaned Baby Mouse
Good Morning,
This weekend my husband and I found an orphaned baby mouse no larger than the size of your thumb. It is rather strong and we have been feeding it watered down soy milk warmed up, but I don't think this is the best thing for it. Could you recommend what to feed this little one?

I have actually done the same thing my brother has snakes. Anyways my mouse lived but I used goats milk and dipped a paint brush into it and let her suck off the milk.she loved it. Also make sure to put a heat pad under their cage.after each feeding make sure to rub their tummy/private are with a q-tip dipped in warm water. For more info I have watched vids in YouTube from a lady with a channel called Creek valley critters. Good luck and j hoped I helped

I bought a baby mouse today his ears are out so I'm guessing he is a week or so old I feed him with a teeny seringe I feed Stuart cat milk and before annd after he eats I give him a rub with a cutip he sleeps a lot and is very active could I have some tips on how to keep him healthy
Good morning - I'm a wildlife rehabilitator and have raised many mice, squirrels, various birds, etc. You're right that cow's milk is not suitable for mice. In many cases it causes severe digestive problems and they develop bloat and die.
I generally use puppy replacement formula and add a half capsule of a probiotic like acidophilus to each cup of formula. It's not exactly like the Mom's milk in terms of protein, fat, etc. but it's close.
I don't have any suggestions on what to use to feed it. I use a 1 cc syringe with a tiny catheter tip. They eat such a small amount at a time (0.3cc) and it's so easy to get too large a drop in their mouth. They can aspirate the formula into their lungs and develop pneumonia. If you're using an eyedropper, all I can suggest is feed him very slowly, one drop at a time and make sure he's lapping it up and swallowing.
Unfortunately, yes, they should be fed every 2 hours while their eyes are closed.
As for the shaking, it could be that he's cold. He also won't eat as well or digest the food well if he's cold. Put a heating pad, set on low, under one end of his cage and make sure he has some soft bedding to snuggle into. Or he could be sick and feverish.
Once his eyes are open, offer some solid foods like a piece of apple (no skin) or pear. If you put a nut in there, I usually use a piece of walnut. It's a softer nut that they can gnaw on. He's not going to have the teeth or strength to open seeds or eat hard foods at first. He should be completely weaned within 2 weeks of opening his eyes.
One more thing, do you stimulate him to go potty after feeding? I dip a corner of the washcloth I use to hold the animal in warm water and then gently pat the genitals. You don't need to rub them. That will cause irritation after a few times. A warm, wet rag just patting will do the trick.

Hi my name is Nakita, i am having a little problem. my boyfriend buys mice to feed the snake and for some odd reason the snake wouldn't eat the mouse and i didn't want to let the mouse die so i am try to care for him to keep as a pet. His eyes are not yet open,but i do think they well open every soon. Roudents are lactose intolerent so they can't drink cows milk so i am feeding my mouse lactose intolerent milk which is soy milk...but i am just not sure if that's enough!! and i am also not sure of how much milk to feed him.. i do feed him every 1 or 2 hours. Becasue i did read up on how you can drown your mouse by feeding him too much at a time!! oh and one more thing my mouse also shakes alot and I dont know why!? would really love to save this little mouse so if anyone can help it would be more then helpful.. thanks so much
you can buy mouse food at pet stores. take milk not soy but regullar milk warm it up and smash the mouse food in it. Use a syringe until it can eat on its own and feed this to the mouse. I rescued 4 wild mice from the time they were still pinkies and raised them up. Also make sure and keep a heating pad on low under the cage to keep the baby warm.
I had a hamster once, I had the mother also but she ate ALL of her babies, I save this one before she could eat it too. I fed it whole milk from a cow.....that sucker grew twice the size as its mom..he was huge...
