10 yearl old woke up to eye pain
He said his eyes hurt when hel looks left and right. They hurt when he looks up and down too but not as much as when looking left and right. He reports that his quality of vision is the same as before.and there no pain when he closes his eyes or opens them. This discomfort he has had all day. Any ideas as to what's going on? Thank you

He could have something in his eye, he could have accidently scratched his eye, if he sleeps with a fan or air blowing on the bed he may have irritation of the eye due to overnight drying. If it persists see an ophthalmologist or your pediatrician.

His eyes are clear and no foreign objects. I just checked his temp and he's at 99.4...
Then unlikely is a primary eye problem.
