Do Blue-Blocking Lenses Reduce Eye Strain From Extended Screen Time? NO THEY DON"T

On occasion when a study is published in a medical journal and I think it would be helpful to users of this Eye Forum I post it. A study of the above was published in The American Journal of Ophthalmology Volume 226 June 2021. Page 243.  authors S Singh, L Downie, AJ Anderson  The Authors are from the University of Melbourne, Australia.  They studied 120 people with eye fatigue do to prolonged screen use (computers, iPad, cell phones, etc).  Eye fatigue was not helped with blue blocking spectacles (and by inference blue blocking screens that go over the computer monitor).     WHAT DOES HELP. This was not the subject of the study but things we have talked about before:  have annual exam by Eye MD ophthalmologist or Non-MD optometrist, correct significant refractive errors, after 40 correct for middle aging eyes (presbyopia), don't have air blowing on your face while on computer,  every 15 minutes look up from the screen, refocus across the room and blink your eyes firmly 10-15 times. Consider putting artificial tears in your eye for lubrication several times/day. prolong screen use really dries the eye.  JHagan MD
