Double Vision after Strabismus Surgery Experience

Hello,

My 7 year old son underwent strabismus surgery 5 days back. His was a case of exotropia and hypertroia in right eye since birth. The doctor decided to operate on both the eyes.
Immediately after the surgery my son developed a double vision. The surgeon said sometimes double vision is considered good after the surgery as it gives hope for a binocular vision.

However in the last few days his vision hasn't improved a lot. The two images as per him are overlapping some 20%. However he is able to function normally since day 2 like reading, writing or playing ball. He keeps saying that I ignore the virtual image but it's not completely resolved.
My concerns are: a. Will the double vision clear off on its own? Has anyone else experienced double vision posy surgery? How much time should I expect it to resolve?
b. If my son's brain continue to ignore the virtual image does that indicate that his chances of binocular vision is diminishing?

Additional info: his right eye was over corrected on purpose.

Any information, experience will be much much appreciated.

My son is now into week 4 after his surgery. His double vision has gotten better as per him but is still there enough to bother him. His over corrected right eye has not drifted out much to get into the desired alignment. Until the overcorrection is resolved the chances of double vision getting okay is slim.
The surgeons opinion is that there is slow but still a progress. SO there's hope!

I've seen these stories have happy endings many times. Better than the eye still wandering out towards the ear.

Strabismus surgery is highly unique and individualistic and thus most of your questions cannot be answered. Over correction of exotrophia is desirable and increases the success of the eyes staying straight and some to good binocular vision. I doubt the surgeon will get excited about the symptoms or consider them a bad omen. Generally the results are fairly stable about 8-12 weeks after surgery.
