Double vision

I had cataract surgery on 3/20/12 and the left one done 4/17/12. When the patch was taken off the left eye the day after surgery i noticed looking to the right and all the way up i have double vision. The further to the right i look the farther apart it gets Looking straight, left and down is fine. I had no problems with double vision of any kind before either surgery. My doctor told me that the fourth cranial nerve that controls the muscle to move to the right is not working due to the injection to numb the eye for surgery.I was wondering if the iol lens was put in wrong or is it the injection that is causes this.and if it is the injection how long will it take to straighten out. The other day when i seen him he said both lens look good. The double vision i have is one on top of the other. Thanks

I agree with your doctor. If 4th nerve was injected it could take some time for it to return to normal functioning. If the lens is in the correct position, then the 4th nerve is the culprit. It should begin to reverse and hopefully return to normal.

It could take weeks or months and small chance it won't fully return to normal. This is one of the risks of anesthesia injection around the eye. If it doesn't return then you may need muscle surgery.
Best of luck!

Thanks for the answer. Have you heard of this happening to others? And if it is the nerve or muscle how long will it take to come back?
