Wow, same issue here.

I've searched everywhere for an answer to this issue. A month ago I started to notice the flashing sensation just up and left of my central field of vision in my left eye. After a few days it turned into silver strands that only are visible against bright lights or areas of high contrast. I haven't seen an eye care specialist yet due to the nature of my job ( don't worry I'll go soon ).

At the time this began I was under a lot of stress, using tobacco products and not getting much sleep. I'm in pretty good shape however I also spend lots of time in front of a LCD computer playing games. When the flashes appeared I was getting slight headaches, but nothing outrageous. The phenomena affects my left eye, which also at the time was twitching a lot. A month later the twitching has subsided for the most part however the silver strands are still there and now I've got another flashing bit just under the old one. Staying off the computer, taking multi vitamins and working out has helped a bit with the incidents. The last flashing bit I got was after a night of heavy drinking with the friends, therefore I chalk it up to stress on the head/body. As of my last check with the eye doc 8 months ago I had 20/20 vision no problem. Due to massive amounts of reading and computer games, my eyes are very stressed.

Hope this helps people, I'm kind of interested in hearing about other folk's lifestyles, computer usage and stress.

Although I'm not much of a hypochondriac (sp?) this instance really worries me

I have this too, as  I type this. These flashing shimmerballs ( as I call them lol) can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few weeks.

Reading and computer use do not damage the eye or cause disease, a need for glasses or loss of vision.
