Hello Dr. Hagan

I have a question for you.  I have a degenerative myopia and I avoid all the contact sports to avoid trauma to the eye.  However, I read that it is unsafe to lift weights because the valsalva maneuver may result in retinal detachment and valsalva retinopathy.  Is it safe to do cardio and lift weights with severe myopia?  Do you have any suggestions what exercises to avoid?
Thank you so much for your help!

That is a good question but it needs to be answered by your team of Eye MDs.  I can't generalize about retina changes in high myopia.

Thank you Dr Hagan!
best of luck. Generalization light/moderate weights, high reps to exhaustion usually okay.  Heavy weights/power lifting lots of grunting, straining and valsalva maneuver not okay.
